Wildfires may get the most attention when they’re burning in the mountains, but fire doesn’t have to start in the hills to threaten a home. Grass fires, nearby structure fires, and wind-driven embers can all create risks for communities.
This workshop is a great opportunity to learn how creating an ember-resistant Zone 0 around your home can help reduce that risk, and to get practical advice directly from fire professionals.

This workshop is open to individuals who live or work within the communities served by Santa Clara County Fire Department: Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Monte Sereno, San Martin, Saratoga and the unincorporated surrounding areas

Join us for our final Wildfire Preparedness Workshop of the season on Thursday, August 27 at the City of Los Altos Community Center beginning at 6pm.

At this workshop, SCCFD experts will be available to provide guidance on California’s Zone 0 defensible space regulations approved by CAL FIRE yesterday, August 19.

Creating an ember-resistant zone within 0–5 feet of structures is now a key priority for reducing wildfire risk. Ask about:

- Navigating the phased implementation rollout for existing homes (Phases 1 & 2).

- Effective non-combustible materials (pavers, gravel, bare earth) to improve structural defense.

- Essential home maintenance tips to prevent wind-driven ember ignitions.

Representatives from United Policyholders , an independent nonprofit consumer advocacy group, will also be on hand to provide guidance and practical tips on navigating home insurance in the Wildland Urban Interface.

What the heck is this?

Spare Keys

Having an extra set of keys is important in an emergency because it ensures quick and reliable access to your home, car, or other essential spaces when the primary keys are lost, misplaced, or locked inside. This can prevent lockouts that cause stress, delays, or dangerous situations such as being unable to evacuate quickly during a fire or natural disaster.

Exchange keys with a trusted neighbor or friend. Or have a lock box installed in an out of the way place on your property and check it often to make sure it hasn’t been breached.

Back To School Bikes and Pedestrians

As school starts back up, more kids will be walking and riding bikes to and from school.Expect the unexpected, especially around school zones and neighborhood streets, where bikes and pedestrians may suddenly enter your path.Give young riders a little extra time and space.

Please help us share the road safely:

Look twice, especially at intersections, driveways, and before turning or opening your car door.

Give at least 3 feet of space when passing all bike riders.• Slow down near bike lanes, parks, schools, and downtown areas, where bike use is common.

E-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, so they need more distance to stop safely.

Younger teens are often not used to the nuances of sharing the road—they may ride erratically or forget to signal turns. They may assume you can see them, even at night. Be patient with them.
