A big win for the Upper Verde and Sycamore Creek!

The Upper Verde and portions of Sycamore Creek recently gained an important layer of water quality protection from the state of Arizona with the approval of an “Outstanding Arizona Waters” designation.

This is a critical layer of protection from the state and also validates the rationale for a federal Wild and Scenic River designation, which should come next in order to fully protect the river!

The Upper Verde River has been identified as possessing seven Outstandingly Remarkable Values (ORVs) which are the unique qualities that qualify this river for a Wild and Scenic River designation.

💎 1. Scenery — spectacular landscapes, canyons, meadows, and riparian beauty.

🛶 2. Recreation — hiking, paddling, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and more.

🪨 3. Geology — extraordinary geological features and a remarkable record of Earth’s history.

🐟 4. Native Fish — important habitat for native fish and threatened species.

🦅 5. Wildlife — a diverse river corridor supporting an extraordinary variety of species.

🏛️ 6. Cultural & Historical — places and landscapes connected to Yavapai and Apache history and culture, as well as generations of ranching and settlement.

🌱 7. Botany / Ecological Values — diverse riparian vegetation and an important ecological corridor supporting life in the arid Southwest.

WHAT MAKES THE UPPER VERDE REMARKABLE?

The answer is its Outstandingly Remarkable Values or “ORVs”.

ORVs are river-related qualities that are rare, unique, or exemplary on a regional or national scale. They are a key criteria for determining whether a river qualifies for protection under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

The Upper Verde is more than a beautiful river. Its scenery, wildlife, native fish, geology, recreation, cultural history, and botany all qualify as Outstandingly Remarkable Values and are, therefore, worth preserving!

Our Mission: Protect the Wild Verde River

The Verde River is an extraordinary ribbon of life through the heart of Arizona. The Upper Verde, from east of Paulden to Clarkdale, is one of Arizona’s healthiest and most important free-flowing rivers.

It provides vital habitat for fish and wildlife, supports recreation and local communities, holds deep cultural and historical significance, and provides clean water for farms, ranches, cities, and Indigenous communities.
