During Women’s History Month 💞✨, we celebrate the life of Dr. Louva Dahozy, a revered community leader and lifelong advocate for the well-being of the Diné people.

Dr. Dahozy dedicated her life as a health educator, knowledge keeper, and voting rights activist. In her 99 years, she worked to:

🪶 Procure funding for radio stations in Diné Bizaad to continue both health education and language preservation,

🪶 Establish the first Navajo homemakers’ radio program, a decade long program, which emphasized how nutrition and healthy food bring healing,

🪶 Volunteer to record hours of oral history and traditional knowledge in partnership with Diné College and Winona State University. This footage is archived at the Navajo Nation Museum,

🪶 Develop 4-H clubs to shared her passion and knowledge for agriculture and animal stewardship for all, but especially children,

🪶 Found the National Indian Council on Aging and institutionalized the Navajo Nation Council on Aging,

🪶 Author the first Navajo Illustrated Cookbook using both native and commodity foods, and

🪶 Co-found the North American Indian Women’s Association and led as its first national chairwoman.

Dr. Louva Dahozy was not only a matriarch of the Diné, but also in the world of Public Health until her passing in January 2026.

✨ Three months. 7 Zoom meetings. 40+ emails. Countless phone calls. Multiple store runs. 20 amazing community partners. And 1,400 pieces of fry bread later…

Today, we finally came together at the San Carlos Unit in Perryville to celebrate Native American culture, connection, and community. ❤️

We want to thank every volunteer and community member who showed up, supported, cooked, packed, donated, and helped make this day possible. When we all show up — heart, hands, and humor included — something truly meaningful happens.
