Week 4 ✔️ | Youth Power & Policy Foundations

Last week, our young leaders discovered something powerful:

Every story tells a bigger story.

We began by reflecting on our own lived experiences, but then challenged participants to zoom out.

How does my story connect to my family?

How does my family’s story connect to my neighborhood?

How does my neighborhood’s story connect to larger systems?

That’s where advocacy begins.

The challenges we experience individually are often shared by entire communities. When we recognize those shared experiences, we stop seeing isolated problems and begin building collective power.

We also took a closer look at community leaders like Angel Gregorio and Ronald Moten, whose personal experiences became the foundation for creating real change across the communities they serve.

Their stories reminded us that leadership isn’t about waiting to be chosen.

It’s about choosing to act.

These young leaders are learning that their voices matter, their experiences have value, and their stories can become catalysts for meaningful change.

This is what youth leadership looks like.

Week 3 ✔️ | Youth Power & Policy Foundations

This week, our future leaders tackled one of the biggest questions of the program:

What is leadership?

We challenged the idea that leadership is simply having a title or being in charge. Instead, we explored how leadership begins with influence, responsibility, service, and the courage to take action.

From there, we shifted our focus to one of the most important leadership skills of all: community listening.

Before we can create change, we have to understand the people we’re hoping to serve. Great leaders don’t assume—they listen. They ask questions. They seek to understand the experiences, challenges, strengths, and hopes of their community before proposing solutions.

This week reminded us that advocacy doesn’t begin with speaking—it begins with listening.

These young leaders are learning that real change starts by understanding the stories behind the issues.

The future of our communities is in good hands. 💙✨

Halfway through Empowered Futures, we asked our participants one simple question:

“How’s it going?”

These are their unfiltered answers. 💬

This summer, we made a deliberate decision to work with an older group of young people—those who were ready to think seriously about entrepreneurship, leadership, financial independence, and creating opportunities for themselves. That decision paid off.

What we’ve witnessed isn’t just engagement—it’s growth. Young people asking bigger questions, building real business ideas, challenging themselves, and beginning to see entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic mobility.

This program is also proof of what’s possible when organizations choose collaboration over competition.

Two founders. Two organizations. One shared vision.

By combining the strengths of Neverblackdown ™️ and Young.Black.Female.Entrepreneurs , we were able to create an experience that’s bigger than either of us could have built alone.

Because when community leaders work together, young people win. ❤️

This is only the halfway point… and we’re just getting started.

Great leaders don’t just learn how to lead others—they first learn how to lead themselves.

During Session 2 of YBFE’s Power & Policy Foundations Lab, our participants explored Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) skills through our partnership with thewiredc

Together, they examined the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions—and how greater self-awareness can strengthen decision-making, communication, emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, and leadership.

Leadership isn’t only about having a voice. It’s about learning how to respond instead of react, navigate challenges with confidence, and make intentional choices under pressure.

By integrating CBT-informed skills into leadership development, we’re equipping young people with practical tools they can apply in school, at home, in their relationships, and as future leaders in their communities.

Because leadership starts from within.

Week 3 Recap: Branding. Marketing. Confidence. 🚀

This week in Neverblackdown ™️ Empowered Futures SYEP, our young entrepreneurs focused on one of the most important parts of building a business—branding and marketing.

Participants designed brand mock-ups, created presentations, and stepped up to deliver 15–30 second elevator pitches, learning how to communicate their ideas with confidence, clarity, and purpose. Because having a great business idea is only the beginning—you also have to know how to share it with the world.

But what made this week especially meaningful was that we didn’t just teach entrepreneurship—we put it into practice.

We proudly supported one participant’s existing business by purchasing snack bags for the entire cohort, giving them a real customer experience. We also invested in another participant’s future by purchasing a one-year website subscription to help launch his business, which will provide all-in-one services for developing artists.

That’s the kind of entrepreneurship education we believe in.

It’s not just about teaching business concepts—it’s about creating opportunities, removing barriers, and investing in young people as they build businesses that can create income, independence, and lasting impact.

Every week, we’re reminded that when we believe in our youth and back their ideas with real support, incredible things happen.

Today, we officially launched the very first session of the YBFE Power & Policy Foundations Lab—and what a powerful start it was.

Our opening theme centered on one powerful idea:

Leadership begins with identity.

Before young people can effectively lead others, influence policy, or create change in their communities, they must first understand who they are, what they value, and the impact they want to make.

Today wasn’t about having all the answers. It was about asking the right questions, building confidence, finding your voice, and laying the foundation for a lifetime of leadership.

Over the next several weeks, this founding cohort will explore civic leadership, advocacy, public speaking, community engagement, and the power they already possess to influence the world around them.

This is more than a program—it’s a space where young leaders are developed, challenged, and empowered to become thoughtful changemakers.

A huge thank you to our founding cohort for showing up with open minds, courage, and a willingness to grow. This is only the beginning.

Most entrepreneurship programs focus on teaching young people how to start a business.

But before we teach them how to build a business, we have to help them recognize the skills they’re already building every day.

Leadership.
Communication.
Problem-solving.
Time management.
Creativity.
Financial responsibility.

These aren’t just “business skills”—they’re life skills.

When young people begin to recognize these strengths within themselves, they stop seeing entrepreneurship as something reserved for “other people.” They begin to realize that becoming an entrepreneur isn’t about being born with a special talent—it’s about intentionally developing the skills they already possess and applying them to create opportunities.

That’s why this review activity wasn’t just about matching vocabulary words. It was about helping participants connect their everyday experiences to their future potential.

Because recognition builds confidence.
Confidence fuels growth.
And growth creates opportunity.

Every young person is capable of becoming more than they can currently imagine. Sometimes, they just need someone to help them recognize it first.

The YBFE Youth Speakers Bureau: Power & Policy Lab is officially launching, and we’re looking for young leaders ages 15–21 who are ready to learn, lead, and create change.

Over six weeks, participants will:
🎤 Build confidence in public speaking
🏛 Learn how DC government and public policy work
📊 Analyze issues affecting their communities
🤝 Develop leadership and advocacy skills
📣 Design solutions and campaigns around issues that matter to them

This isn’t about politics.

It’s about understanding power, using your voice with confidence, and learning how to advocate for yourself, your family, and your community.
