Thank you for helping to support our pollinator friends! In 2023, the Camp Hill Bee City USA Committee planted a pollinator garden beside the Camp Hill Borough Hall at base of the clock tower and in 2024 we extended the garden behind the benches that surround that court yard. In 2026 we planted pere...

In bloom at Seibert Park: Mayapples! You can easily see the pretty green umbrellas along the trails, but you have to peek underneath the double-umbrella plants to spot the flowers. These will develop into fruits at an ideal height to sustain Pennsylvania's turtle populations, which will help spread the seeds for the plant.

In bloom at Seibert park: pawpaws!
I had no idea that we had pawpaws at Seibert park until I did a walk-through looking for candidates for a wildflower walk. Although inconspicuous, these beauties are the precursors to the custard-like fruit that will appear in late summer. The foliage is the host plan for the spectacular zebra swallowtail butterfly - its caterpillars eat exclusively from the pawpaw tree.

In bloom in the borough: Redbud! With it's delicate pink flowers reminiscent of tiny lady's slippers, and heart-shaped foliage, what's not to love about redbud? It is a great provider of nectar during these early months, even feeding early-arriving hummingbirds during this time.

In bloom in the borough: Wild strawberry (Fragraria virginiana). These tiny blooms are considered a high value plant for pollinators, attracting cuckoo bees, mason bees, halictid bees, small carpenter bees, small butterflies, and dozens kinds of flies and beetles. If you are lucky, you may get to harvest a few of the fragrant fruits, otherwise a wide variety of animals will take advantage of them, including birds, rabbits, rodents and turtles.

They are rapid spreaders, and good for taking over areas with poor soil, such as this rocky driveway embankment.

Now in bloom at the borough pollinator garden: Golden Alexander! This early bloomer is a great pollen provider, and the foliage, like several other members of the carrot family, is a host plan for Black Swallowtail caterpillars. Spreads prolifically by seed.

We had a great Saturday expanding our garden at the borough building with a generous donation of plants from Camp Hill resident Vikki Moyle! We also worked on a great deal of pruning and fencing for the rabbits, and concluded we may need yet another workday in May to put in annuals and clean up container gardens. Stay tuned to join us!
