Our Story:
Voce (vō-chāy), which means voice, is a change agent. We use our voice, and empower you to use yours, to create positive, lasting change in people’s lives. We use our voice because we believe every person should belong and be empowered to thrive. Our agency (previously known as Family Design Resources) began in 1999 by pioneering a model that is nationally recognized for expediting adoptions and supporting families. Today, we provide consultation and training to agencies throughout the country in the areas of trauma and loss, adoption and permanency, diversity and inclusion, and individual and family well-being. Additionally, with our partner Diakon, we co-administer the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) program for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Voce is a member of the Adoption Exchange Association, Child Welfare League of America, North American Council on Adoptable Children, and Youth Collaboratory.

"I live in Saegertown, and I've lived in northwestern PA my whole life. I've been here with Voce in the county for 12 years. I started out as a legal secretary. I had an internship with the DA's office, and from there I was hired for a law office. I needed a break from legal work after that, though, and so for a while, I did admin work at a mental health office. I guess it makes sense that I found myself here.

I have two adult children, and outside of work, I spend a lot of time with them. My daughter is also in school right now for nursing, and my son is getting married this fall. He's a special education teacher in Meadville. Their grandmother was a special education teacher, so he must take after her in that way.

I have two dogs, and one is a puppy. And I'm actually about to get another puppy (it's a long story...). We're doing lots of potty training right now, and they chew on everything! Between caring for them, doing some side work in the evenings, church and work, I keep pretty busy. So, I also like to take time to blast music and clean the house or play some little phone games to decompress.

As boring as it may sound, my job is one of my biggest passions. We're all really close here, and we have a really good team. If one of us is out, the others pick up where we need to. I've worked with one person who's been here with me for 12 years, and my sister even started here 3 years ago. I love the people I work with. Some days, I'd even rather be here than at home."

Congratulations to 13 child welfare professionals who recently completed training on Supervising for Excellence and Success! 👏

As a member of the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), Voce was pleased to host the in-person portion of this CWLA training at our Camp Hill training space. Over the course of the program, participants had the opportunity to learn together, exchange ideas and strengthen skills they can bring back to their teams and organizations.

We believe investing in the child welfare workforce strengthens our collective ability to serve children and families. We were glad to provide a space for that learning and connection—and we congratulate each participant on completing the program!

Today, we were proud to walk alongside our friends at the Children's Advocacy Centers of Pennsylvania at the Shine Walk in Harrisburg, raising awareness about child sexual abuse, supporting survivors and shining a light on the important work of Children’s Advocacy Centers across Pennsylvania.

Every child deserves an adult who will protect, listen, believe and act. Never underestimate the difference one adult can make.

Voce's work is rooted in strengthening children and families, supporting healing and helping people build the relationships and connections they need to thrive. We are grateful to stand with PennCAC and others across the Commonwealth who share our commitment to protecting children, supporting survivors and ensuring their voices are heard.

What does permanency mean to an older youth in foster care?

It can mean more than a placement or legal designation. It can mean knowing who will keep showing up, which relationships will endure and who will still be there long after involvement with the child welfare system ends.

SOUL Family, developed with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and young people with lived experience, offers an innovative approach to permanency that centers youth voice and builds on the family and community connections already in a young person’s life.

Voce recently joined the Annie E. Casey Foundation, young people with lived experience, child welfare leaders, advocates and partners from across the country to explore SOUL Family and its potential to create another pathway to lifelong connection and belonging.

Investing in supervisors means investing in the child welfare workforce.

As a Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) member, Voce is pleased to serve as the host site for Supervising for Excellence and Success, an upcoming professional development opportunity for child welfare supervisors.

The September training will take place across three dates—one virtual session followed by two days of in-person learning at Voce’s training space in Camp Hill, PA.

Strong supervisors play a critical role in supporting staff, strengthening practice and creating the conditions for children and families to thrive. We’re glad to help bring child welfare professionals together to learn, connect and strengthen their leadership skills.

We look forward to welcoming participants to Camp Hill and supporting CWLA in this investment in the child welfare workforce.

On National Paralegal Day, August 6th, we're celebrating our team of behind-the-scenes professionals whose expertise and dedication plays an important role in helping children find the stability, belonging, and lifelong connections they deserve.

“I can’t say exactly why, but ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to work in adoption—I just didn’t know how or why. A friend from my neighborhood and I used to play adoption agency with our dolls. I’ve always been a helper by nature.

After graduating from college, I spent a short time at a bank before crossing paths with someone from a foster care and adoption agency. That connection led me to a role at the same agency, where I eventually became a permanency supervisor. I worked closely with families, each with their own unique dynamic, and I loved it. Sometimes it took years for a family to find the courage to pick up the phone and begin the adoption process. It was powerful to see how adoption could transform their lives.

It’s been almost nine years since I came to Voce as a technical assistant, and two years since becoming a division manager. Guiding has been a part of every role I’ve held—whether supporting families through adoption, helping agencies deliver services, or leading a team of permanency professionals. Two members of my team are people I also supervised at the adoption agency where we all once worked. I joke with them that they’re stuck with me.
I love that my team members are all so different, yet equally passionate about permanency. Their personalities, backgrounds, and skill sets come together in a way that works. My role is to guide them and help them shine.

I’m also a wife and a mom of three. My team hears about my kids. They see that I’m a real person. I try to do the same for them. Life is life, and we’re all here to support each other and step in when it matters most.”

As we look back on June, we're grateful to have joined The Cracked Pot Coffee Shop's golf benefit in support of an organization whose mission closely aligns with our own.

We believe every young person deserves connection, belonging, and the opportunity to thrive. The Cracked Pot puts those beliefs into action by supporting young adults who are aging out of foster care without the family supports many of us take for granted. “When I was a child, I remember waiting on the porch for my dad to show up and, of course, he let me down. Being a single mom, I never wanted my son to experience that same hurt. The first day my then-boyfriend Josh met Brayden, we grabbed Chinese takeout. At the time, Brayden was learning how to wrestle, so Josh showed him his high school wrestling medals. From early on, we knew adoption was part of our future. We wanted our family to share the same name. We were married in 2023 and a year later, Josh adopted Brayden.

Before coming to Voce, I was working at McDonalds and training to be a general manager. I thought my future was set. I was making decent money and I had a plan, and if you know me, you know I love plans. The schedule was rough though. I was missing out on important moments with Brayden and my one-year-old, Theo.

When my sister-in-law told me about the opening at Voce for an administrative assistant, my mom told me, ‘You’ll never know until you try.’ Before my first interview, I learned what Voce was all about. I’ve been close to people who grew up in difficult home situations, including foster care, and have seen the lasting impact of generational trauma. For so many reasons, I love what we do and who we do it for.

Outside of work, life is full in the best way. Between sports seasons with the boys and spending time with my nieces, there’s always something going on. I love taking pictures and turning those everyday moments into scrapbooks—one of my favorite creative outlets.

I’m still working on building my confidence and finding my voice, but I’m happy and excited for the future. I’m growing as a person and also helping the company grow. Someday I’m going to look back and say, ‘I helped make that happen.’ Unless they kick me out, I plan on staying forever."
