Worldwide Child Relief Foundation

Worldwide Child Relief Foundation WCRF is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children learn skills to help foster a better way of life in the future. Join us on our next Charitour!!!

What is it? The WCRF Chari-Tour is an opportunity to travel internationally as an humanitarian volunteer. You pay for your own tax deductible travel expenses through the Worldwide Child Relief Foundation. Our humanitarian work currently focuses on the small village of La Calle Real, Nicaragua. It is located about one hour northeast of the city of Leon. It is 15 miles east of the small town of Malp

asillio where over 90% of the people live in extreme poverty. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in all of Central and South America. In La Calle Real most people live and support their families as subsistence farmers or small pottery businesses. After generations of division, family land has been divided into tiny plots that can barely produce enough corn and beans to last between three and nine months. To supplement their income, people work as day laborers, or seasonally migrate to work on sugar and coffee plantations. Most families do not have running water, refrigeration, washing machines, dryers, or stoves. Most cooking is done inside or outside over an open fire. Most transportation is by foot, bike, and bus if you can get to the main highway. Nutrition is poor with the staple food being rice and beans. Better off families own some livestock. Public schools do not receive any money from the government for school supplies, materials, or equipment. Teachers and staff is the only resource provided by the government. Education beyond secondary school is priced reasonably, but is beyond the means for most LCR families. Despite the extreme poverty, you will notice that the children arrive at school well groomed, wearing clean clothes (even if they must wash them every day). They are anxious to learn and have a good attitude. We have found the school personnel and the community to be very supportive and grateful for our assistance.

In such a fast paced, technology-obsessed world, it can be easy for communities to get behind if they don’t have access to computers or the internet. From the beginning, it’s been important to find a way to get computers to La Calle Real and connect them to the rest of the online network.

That’s why it was such a miracle in 2014 that we found ourselves in possession of 20 donated laptops! A friend of a volunteer worked at a waste management company in Denver, Colorado and volunteered to give us the laptops they were getting rid of. It seemed like the opportunity just fell into our laps. We filled our suitcases for our trip that summer, eager to share the miraculous gift we’d been given…

…Only to be stopped at Nicaraguan customs. We were told we could only have two laptops per person, but we soon realized the customs agents were really only interested in keeping them for themselves. It seemed like we weren’t going to get those computers to the deserving people anyway.

Fortunately, the computers had been completely wiped clean of their operating systems, prior to the trip, with the intention of reinstalling them once we arrived at the community. Once the customs agents found out the computers were completely useless for the time being, they let us go and the rest of the trip went without a hitch.

Since then, we’ve been able to bring more technology down to Nicaragua and now we’re fortunate to have a community center where anyone in the village of La Calle Real can access the internet. Now, communication with the community itself has improved and children can better prepare for university education!
