Hello to all NBPBA members. I wanted to send out this notification to inform all members that our burn season for fall of 2025-2026 is completed. We conducted several successful burns during this season, to include both grassland and woodland.

This year has been interesting as we were able to get in several burns in February and only a few in March. The weather pattern had much to do with this. Several of our members have readied their property for burning and have submitted burn plans to Daniel Bruns for review and approval.

We were hoping to get two or three more burns completed during the last weeks of March. But to be clear the conditions are not favorable to do so safely.

Several fire districts in Camden and surrounding counties have imposed burn restrictions.

As president I have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure NBPBA continues to be a safety grounded Association. Over the next few days, it was clear that even if we could squeeze in another burn, the conditions were at our outer limits of prescription. The winds that followed would require constant vigilance and observation of the woodland burns.

This was a risk that I was not willing to accept.

I want to thank each and every member that participated in our burns. Your efforts are what make our Association possible.

I always want to recognize that having members that could participate in weekday burns made a huge difference this year. The weather Gods do not always work on weekends. Having members that can help during the week made the difference this year!

I also want to thank Daniel for his tireless work on reviewing and writing burn plans, going out to inspect the member’s burn sites, as well as giving guidance. We are a better Association because of his involvement. He teaches all of us how to safely conduct prescribed burning. I am a better prescribed burn advocate because of his advice and efforts.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our April 18th semiannual meeting.

With warm regards
Lance Dunbar
President - NBPBA

Hello PBA members, on March 19th we conducted a 23 acres hay fields burn at Leo Marler homestead farm. There were two units. It was a really nice day and the burn went exactly as described in the burn plan. Shout out to Daniel Brun for writing an excellent burn plan! I also want to thank Laurie Maler for taking these great videos of the burn.

There was a hedgerow of trees that ran down the center of the second unit. Durning the mop up, we identified a dead tree that was on fire and required additional review. It was well in the middle of the black. Later that afternoon, Leo, on his UTV, reviewed his units to ensure all was secure, and specifically looked at this dead tree. As it turned out, he caught it on video when the tree dropped to the ground. Very cool.

Thanks to all the members that participated in this burn!

When we first established the NBPBA we went out to local businesses asking for donations to purchase our first equipment. The very first place we went was to The Motor Hut. We spoke with Alan, who is known by all as Jumper. After hearing what we were trying to achieve in land management, Jumper without hesitation gifted us 100.00 dollars. Which we were able to double with a one for one dollar match from a grant from the Missouri Prescribed Fire Council. This money along with others was used to fund our initial equipment purchase.

Further and even more importantly, they help sponsor the beautiful wrapping on our trailer. This is another local establishment that gives back to local entities like NBPBA. As a show of appreciation, we presented Jumper and is father Alan a plaque pictured here with our Burn Coordinator Daniel Bruns.

I hope each of our members remember the Motor Hut when you need to buy outside equipment to manage your property. While there, mention that you are a member of our PBA and you will receive a discount. How great is that!!

Speaking for the board and all our members, thank you The Motor Hut for your support!

On Saturday February 28th we completed an eighteen acres woodland burn for member Warren Newton. This burn was in Dallas County. We had a successful burn. On subsequent surveillance, Warren did have to watch one standing dead tree that was close to the burn break until 2 am ensuring the dead branches that slow burned from ambient heat and contained embers fell to the ground and was safe. His diligent attention ensured a successful conclusion of this burn!
