In April, the Sisters of Saint Joseph and Partners in Mission at the SSJ Neighborhood Center experienced "Clay and Reflection" facilitated by Jen Coelho at the Markeim Arts Center in Haddonfield. Jen, a volunteer with our M.A.M.I.S. program, is from Christ Our King Parish and the Clay Studio Director at the Markeim Arts Center. She led us in a reflection on Scripture, sharing our talents, all the while teaching us some basic clay work. After our clay instruction, we were all given a clay base and began to mold clay in silent reflection. This was followed by sharing our stories. As it turns out, all our Partners in Mission are artists and easily took to creating something beautiful. We are grateful to Jen for her gentle nature, creativity, and for sharing her talents with us. She fired our clay creations and delivered them in early May. Quotes from our partners and sisters, "It was both a peaceful and relaxing experience."

I ask for the graces of patience and trust.
I pray to see each moment as God does.
I willingly inconvenience myself to show care for Earth.

Our M.A.M.I.S. (a Spanish acronym meaning mothers embracing more healthy initiatives) program runs from October through May. True to our mission of uniting our neighbors and providing opportunities for connection, we end the MAMIS program around Mother's Day with parties to celebrate mothers. Mothers enjoy time praying, dancing, sharing meals, and traditions from their countries. We pray in gratitude for the generous volunteers who help run the program and for all the donors. Enjoy some photos from our recent Mother's Day Gathering.

Who can I praise or thank today?
I choose to refrain from judgment and seek to understand others.
What good news can I pass on to friends, family, co-workers?

Prayer Witness for Corporate Stand

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia have adopted a Corporate Stand in solidarity with Immigrants, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers. This public commitment reflects our Gospel values and call to action in support of our dear neighbors through love, accompaniment, and learning, grounded in Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, and the SSJ charism and mission.

We invite you to join us in prayer on Monday, June 1 as we mark the 7th anniversary of the SSJ Neighborhood Center by standing in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Thank you for living the charism and mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph by fostering unity, honoring the dignity of every dear neighbor, and remaining faithful in our shared mission.

Here are more photos from our ESL Classes that feature our morning and afternoon classes, with both students and teachers. Congratulations to everyone for a great year! The SSJ Neighborhood Center offers English Classes from September through the end of April. Rooted in a love of God and neighbor without distinction, the Center offers opportunities for connection, empowerment, and uniting neighbors. This year has held some obstacles for our English learners. When classes needed to switch to online, students and teachers stepped up to the challenge. We were happy to come together at the Center to bring the learning year to a close with fiestas for morning and evening classes. Awards for perfect attendance and certificates of participation were given. Good food, gifts, laughter, pictures, and dancing were shared. God bless our dedicated teachers who serve our neighbors, and the students committed to learning English. We pray that all have safe, healthy, and happy summers.

Thoughts to ponder…
I let go of self-consciousness and rest in the grace of the present moment.
I follow the Gospel: let your yes be “yes” and your no be “no.”
I notice creation: each creature faithful to how the Creator designed it.

On Saturday, April 25, the Domenica Foundation Hosted Spring Into Action 2026. Domenica organized a day of service with 150+ volunteers, 8 community partners, and 1 mission. Each spring, we are blessed to welcome a group of volunteers at the SSJ Neighborhood Center. This year, the director of the CASA Youth Program, Mrs. Lourdes Sherby, came with her husband, Jay, and a great group of workers. Students of various ages built shopping carts for our neighbors to use on Food Pantry Day. They cleared out the hall, swept, mopped the floor, brought down tables, and set up for the English Class Fiestas. They also pulled the weeds from all 19 garden beds. We were so impressed with their energy and willingness to serve. Thank you to the Domenica Foundation for organizing this day, and to CASA for their great help.

Thoughts to ponder on…
I pause several times to see if I am living in the present moment.
I notice what evokes strong emotions in me and ask to see these in the Spirit’s light.
I ask to become more conscious of how I use Earth’s resources.
