War Memorial Post No. 30

War Memorial Post No. 30 The American Legion, Inc. is a federally chartered corporation formed in Paris on March 16, 1919 by veterans of the American Expeditionary Forces.

Europeans first visited the Camden area in 1605, but it would be another hundred years before the first settlers arrived. Camden was incorporated in 1791, the 72nd town in Maine, with a population of 332. The town was named in honor of an 18th century English lord, Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden. At that time Maine was part of Massachusetts, and would remain so until 1820, when it was admitted to t

he union as part of the Missouri compromise. During the Revolutionary War the British had captured Castine, which was historically a French village. From there they controlled the Penobscot Bay. Camden residents were divided. The town’s Rebels together with others from the surrounding area harassed the British, while their Torre neighbors gave their full support to the Crown. But Camden was seen as a center of revolutionary fervor, and in 1779 the British troops burned the Harbor. Camden’s sons played their part in the Civil War fighting bravely at Chancellorsville, Fredricksburg and Gettysburg. And William Conway was given a gold medal for bravery in that war for refusing to strike the American flag at Pensacola, saying, “I won’t do it sir, that’s the flag of my country.”

Many Sons and further along in history, Daughters of Camden continued the march of freedom for the town and country by volunteering their service during the War of 1812, African Campaigns, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Desert Storm, War in Afghanistan and War in Iraq. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. It was through the National and state efforts that Camden developed and implemented their own Legion Post.

War Memorial Post No. 30 held a Memorial Day Program at the Post due to the bad weather the parades for Camden, Rockport & Lincolnville were cancelled.

After the program those who wanted joined Post 30 in a great seafood and corn chowder lunch with biscuits & fruit salad. Thanks to Heatha Bergey for her prep and serving of the food.

After the lunch Post 3 members laid wreaths at all the Towns memorials as they normally do.

Here's hoping next year we can return to our beloved parades.

Enjoy the photos.

On Sunday Post 30 had the pleasure of being present when Zachary Mason, Troop 200, along with several Troop comrades came together at the post and Zach completed his Eagle project by setting the new flag disposal box in place.

Zach came to the post last year with his proposal of doing his Eagle Project to benefit the post. The photos show the fruits of Zach's labors.

Indeed a beautiful addition to Post 30. Thank you Zachary, Troop 200 and all the Scouts who cane out to support Zach.
