# # # The Dire Economic and Educational Crisis in Wilcox County, Alabama
Wilcox County, Alabama, is in a state of economic emergency, and local leaders are failing to address the severe conditions that our community faces. As of February 2024, Wilcox County's unemployment rate stands at a staggering 10.6%, significantly higher than the national average. Moreover, a substantial portion of our population lives below the poverty line, with 26.8% of residents in poverty as of 2022. This dire economic situation demands urgent and effective action from our local leaders, yet they continue to turn a blind eye.
The Wilcox County Board of Education is failing our children, and the impact on their future is devastating. Under the leadership of Dr. Andre P. Saulsberry, the school district has consistently received failing grades. Dr. Saulsberry has shown unethical behavior by favoring certain employees despite their reckless and unlawful conduct. This favoritism not only undermines the integrity of the educational system but also hinders the progress of our students who deserve better.
Dr. Saulsberry’s leadership has been marked by neglect and a lack of accountability. He has failed to provide the necessary resources and support to ensure that our children receive a quality education. The continuous negligence by the Wilcox County Board of Education and Dr. Saulsberry is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated any longer.
The Wilcox County Commission is equally culpable. Several leaders are involved in open corruption, further exacerbating the problems our county faces. These leaders are not only ignoring the economic distress of our community but are also actively participating in corrupt practices that hinder any potential progress. It is time to hold these leaders accountable and demand transparency and integrity in our local government.
We must come together as a community—black, white, and multi-racial citizens, young and old alike—and demand change. The economic and educational future of Wilcox County depends on our collective action.
