Dear UrbanPromise family,
Yesterday, we learned of the passing of someone very special to us, Dana Covert. Our prayers are with Dana, her family, and her loved ones during this difficult time.
Dana faithfully served the youth of Camden for many years and made a lasting impact on everyone she met. We would love to hear your memories of Dana.
A letter from Pamela Foxx-Levi:
Dana Covert was a deeply valued and beloved member of our organization whose life and work left an enduring imprint on countless young people, staff, and families. Dana served with humility, compassion, and excellence, demonstrating steadfast dedication to every individual she encountered. Dana did not see young people as participants in a program, but she embraced them as an extension of her own family.
Dana welcomed each young person into the StreetLeader job training program with openness, warmth, and authenticity. She consistently reflected the love of God through her actions, offering kindness, encouragement, and steadfast support. Whether someone needed guidance, resources, a listening ear, or simply someone to believe in them, Dana responded with grace, intentionality, and care.
What distinguished Dana most was her extraordinary ability to help young people recognize their inherent worth. She invested in them relentlessly, encouraging them to believe in themselves regardless of their circumstances or challenges. She reminded them that they were children of God worthy of dignity, purpose, and opportunity. Through her mentorship, Dana helped young people envision possibilities beyond their immediate realities and walked faithfully alongside them as they pursued those paths through high school, college, and into adulthood.
Dana also demonstrated remarkable courage in engaging difficult conversations, guiding both young people and staff with wisdom, empathy, and discernment. While her formal responsibilities centered on wellness and care, her influence extended far beyond any defined role. Long before holistic wellness became a central focus at UrbanPromise, Dana championed an integrated approach recognizing that emotional, spiritual, educational, and personal well-being are deeply interconnected and essential to growth of our young people.
Dana approached every responsibility with intentionality and excellence. Whether supporting students through the college process, strengthening educational programming, nurturing spiritual development, or caring for the well-being of staff and youth, Dana consistently gave her very best. Her attention to detail, thoughtful leadership, and servant-hearted approach elevated every space she entered.
On a personal level, I will always remember Dana for her gentle spirit, integrity, humility, and the profound dignity she extended to every person. When I joined UrbanPromise in 2009, Dana immediately made me feel welcomed, seen, and valued. She encouraged me to move beyond the boundaries of my role and build meaningful relationships with our young people, shaping my understanding of what authentic leadership and care truly require. Her wisdom has had a lasting impact on both my professional journey and personal growth.
While we grieve the loss of such an extraordinary individual, we are equally grateful for the legacy she leaves behind. The seeds Dana planted in the lives of hundreds of young people will continue to grow for generations. Her impact is evident in the confidence, resilience, faith, and hope of those she mentored and loved.
There is a saying that “we must find our people,” and Dana was unquestionably one of ours. She embodied love, service, faith, and compassion in a way that transformed lives. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit and influence will remain an enduring part of UrbanPromise and the community she so faithfully served.
Dana, thank you for your character, integrity, compassion, and unwavering belief and mentorship to our young people. Thank you for seeing them, investing in them, and helping them discover who they were created to be. I am profoundly grateful to have known you and honored to have experienced your friendship and ministry over the years.
Dana, you will never be forgotten.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
Blessings Forever,
Pamela
