To our UrbanPromise family,

With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our alum, Megan Kenner.

Megan was a part of our StreetLeader program and brought so much joy wherever she went. She smiled brightly, hugged warmly, cared deeply, and had a way of making the people around her feel loved. And when Megan sang, she filled the room with her beautiful voice—a reflection of the joy she carried within her.

Megan, you left a lasting mark on our UrbanPromise community. We are grateful for the beautiful life you lived and the love you shared with so many.

Our hearts are with Megan’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A walk down memory lane:
The Day Charles Barkley Came to UrbanPromise

Alison Caldwell: “There’s a guy on the phone who wants to donate some golf clubs.”

Bruce: “Great, have him drop them off.”

Alison: “He wants someone to drive to Philly and pick them up.”

Bruce: “Ha, I don’t think so. He’ll have to drop them. We don’t do golf club pick ups.”

Five minutes later Alison comes back to my office.

Alison: “He says his name is Charles Barkley.”

Bruce: “The Charles Barkley?”

Alison: “I didn’t ask him. Maybe he’s a stock broker. He says he’s coming over.”

An hour later, Sir Charles Barkley gets out of a Black Escalade with four bags of golf clubs.

He came to my office with his four bags of clubs and said, “I get this stuff all the time and never use it.”

By that time there was a line outside my door of kids wanting to say hi. “Hey Charles, would you mind sharing a few words with the kids in the sanctuary?”

Three hours later he’s giving a 100 kids a lecture on self-determination and why he thinks we’re the answer to our own prayers—in a hot, sweaty sanctuary because we couldn’t afford to fix the AC unit.

A memorable UP moment for sure. Were you there?

In 1997, UrbanPromise Academy opened in a 600-square-foot row home—with closet-sized classrooms, one bathroom, donated textbooks, and educators who refused to believe the statistics were the final word.

They believed that when young people are known, challenged, encouraged, and loved, they can flourish.

They were right.

Today, hundreds of alumni are building meaningful lives—including Jenniffer Lopez, who credits UrbanPromise with helping shape her future.

Now, 150 students are counting on us.

We’re raising $100,000 to keep tuition affordable and provide exceptional teachers, small classes, transformational experiences, and a safe, faith-centered education.
And right now, your gift can go twice as far. The first $48,000 given by September 30 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

The next 30 years start with them.
Will you help us keep the doors open for the students who need us most?

Our schools start back up tomorrow! 📚🎒

Before the new school year begins, we want to take a moment to say thank you to all of the amazing individuals, churches, and companies who donated school supplies.

You didn’t just give supplies—you rallied your communities, gave generously, and helped make sure our students have what they need to start the year strong.

And when we say everyone, we mean everyone. Whether you dropped off supplies, mailed them in, or welcomed us to pick them up, your generosity made a difference.

Thank you for thinking of our students and for helping us prepare for another incredible school year. We’re excited for what’s ahead! ❤️📚

Here’s to a great year!
