"Families who educate privately do not interpret compliance with state law as permission for solicitation." Last week we touched on home education and the right to privacy. The folks at Home Educators Association of Virgina (HEAV) hone in on a particular aspect of families' right to privacy: the tendency of some school districts to use their contact information to solicit attendance at public schools. Has your information been misused? We highly recommend reading this article and particularly noting the suggestions at the end.

This year, our homeschool community has been touched by the devastating tragedies of some of our homeschool friends and neighbors.

In addition to helping homeschooling families in need throughout the year, HOME will be utilizing its scholarship funds to donate to both the Robbins Lumber Fire Relief Fund and the Mazone family for Lucca Mazone.

Homeschoolers of Maine is growing a garden!

We have transplanted HOME Gardens into a new space with new ideas to help your family learn about food supply and production. Get involved in an outside activity (a windowsill can work if that’s all you have, but get outside and explore some public gardens!). Connect with the wonders of creation, and explore the real world of plants, soil, good and bad bugs, and all that goes into caring for a living thing with patience.

For new gardeners, we recommend starting with a packet of bush beans, a cherry tomato plant, or a zucchini plant. The HOME team will share some fun, easy recipes for this normally abundant vegetable.

If you don’t have a lot of space, try a milk crate lined with layers of cardboard and then potting soil, or a couple milk jug bottoms.

Don’t have outdoor space? Try a package of micro green seeds or go to a nursery and pick an herb or two like basil or oregano. (We don’t recommend the potted options in produce sections, they rarely survive).
