For all 19 years of our banquets Madison “Skip” Nicholson provided security for our guests—watching the parking lot, the front door, and making sure everyone was having a safe evening. He wouldn’t leave until the last committee member locked the doors of the venue and drove away. He was a giant in our community. Our prayers are with his family.

Nicholson, 78, was shot to death late Wednesday afternoon in Wilcox County.

Update from our chapter: We are not going to have a regular banquet this spring due to not having a large venue to host the event. We are planning to do a smaller event later this summer, a Gun Blast. In the meantime, we are looking to add a few new committee members. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please send us a message.

We are currently seeking clarification but have learned that a motion was made at yesterday’s conservation advisory board meeting to reduce turkey season to only the month of April and to change to a three bird limit. This could be voted and enacted at the February meeting. Stay tuned...

We recently adopted regulations effective for the 2020-2021 hunting seasons, which included adding language to the Prohibited Methods and Devices for Hunting Regulation (220-2-.11) to clarify that the use of turkey decoys for practices such as fanning and reaping are and have been illegal. Legal turkey decoys consist of stationary sit on top of ground or staked in the ground decoys, capable of movement by wind only. This is NOT new. This is added language clarifying what was already illegal.

220-2-.11(e) states: It shall be unlawful for any person while engaged in turkey hunting in this State to use or have in his possession a decoy which has mechanical or electronic parts which makes the decoy capable of movement or producing sound or which can be manipulated to produce movement or sounds. Mechanical parts include, but are not limited to, decoys attached to weapons or handheld and manipulated to produce movement such as fanning or reaping. It is further provided, however, that no turkey decoys shall be lawful except during spring turkey season in the area of use.
