Troop 200 campout at Ducktrap Wildlife Preserve — April 2026

⚜️ Scouts from Troop 200 enjoyed a great weekend at Ducktrap Wildlife Preserve in Lincolnville. After Friday night’s rain cleared out, Saturday was warm(ish) and beautiful. They got in some good service hours doing trail maintenance, shoring up a bridge and improving a muddy, sloping trail. And there was time for a nice leisurely hike exploring along the river. Scouts cooked their meals outdoors both over open fire and cook stove. Saturday night was beautifully clear, perfect for telling stories and roasting marshmallows for s’mores over a well-built campfire. 🔥 Thanks to scouts Ben, JP, and Markus and Asst. Scoutmaster Matt for sharing their photos! 📸

Six of our Scouts went on a great hike last Saturday in the new fallen snow — almost 8 miles :)

2026 Klondike Derby Hosted by Maine Maritime Academy
(Thanks to photographers Jared, Levi, and Ben for sharing great photos from their weekend!)

02/09/2026

Thanks to Maine Maritime Academy for hosting the 55th Klondike Derby!

Scouts from Troop 200 joined 16 other Troops from across Maine last weekend for the Klondike. They set up camp in the MMA field house for the weekend and got to eat their meals in the dining hall — a nice break from outdoor cooking and winter camping!

MMA staff and cadets led the scouts on interesting tours across campus Saturday morning:
Power Lab/ diesel & gas engines
Ship Fire Safety Lab
Schooner Crew/Knot tying
Wet Lab/Touch Tank/Marine Biology

The Academy chose Nuclear Energy as this year’s theme to highlight the re-introduction of its nuclear engineering program, with its long-term focus on reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector.

The actual Klondike Derby race was held Saturday afternoon in the brisk but sunny, single digit weather. Scouts had to maneuver their gear-laden sleds to points throughout the snowy trails of Witherle Woods where MMA staff and cadets were stationed with a set of tasks to test the Scouts’ skills in winter outdoor survival, communication and teamwork:

* Perform First Aid
* Raise a rescue signal flag,
* Build a shelter
* Use teamwork to lead a blindfolded scout through a maze
* Navigate their groups’ “nuclear core” through a set of obstacles to a target destination.

All throughout the day the teams needed to carry the “nuclear core” (small wooden ball or tennis ball) with them, making sure not to lose it, and incorporating it into their work at each station.

A timed sled race across the grounds of the Old Fort George ended their day outside in the snow.

After dinner the Scouts had free time to swim in the pool and play hoops. Another great Klondike Derby weekend at Maine Maritime Academy!

Thanks to photographers Jared, Levi, and Ben for sharing great photos from their weekend!
