🐾KCHS BEHIND THE SCENES🐾
When people visit an animal shelter, they often see wagging tails, purring cats, and clean kennels. What many don’t see is the countless hours of care, dedication, and compassion that happen behind the scenes every single day.
When an emaciated dog arrives at our shelter, the work begins immediately. Staff carefully monitor their condition, get adequate vet care, create specialized feeding plans, and often provide multiple small meals throughout the day to help them gain weight safely. Every pound gained is celebrated, and every meal eaten is a step toward recovery.
When sick cats and kittens come through our doors, they receive much more than a warm place to rest. Staff administer medications, monitor symptoms, clean eyes and noses, provide supportive care, and make sure they stay comfortable while they heal. Many of these animals require treatment several times a day, every day, until they are healthy enough for adoption.
Then there are the things that don’t always make it into photos:
-Extra feedings (special meals)
-Flea baths, tick removal, medicated baths
-Administer Medications morning and night
-Administer Fluids for the severe dehydrated/sick
-Cutting matted fur
-Health Evaluations
-Cleaning wounds
And so much more…in some cases, our staff even provide around the clock care. They not only work all day, but take the ones that need it most home to ensure care can be provided overnight.
Shelter work is often messy, exhausting, and emotionally challenging. It means staying late to care for a sick animal, celebrating small victories, and sometimes carrying the weight of heartbreaking situations. But it also means witnessing incredible transformations—from neglected and frightened to healthy, happy, and loved.
Every animal that leaves our shelter healthy and ready for a forever home is a testament to the hard work of shelter staff, volunteers, fosters, and supporters who refuse to give up on them.
The next time you see an adoption photo, remember that there is an entire story and a village of people behind that smiling face—a story filled with compassion, dedication, and people working tirelessly to give animals a second chance.
This is why volunteers, fosters, your donations, and the community support is important and appreciated, because without you the staff wouldn’t be able to help the lost, forgotten, and neglected animals that come from Kershaw County.
Below is just a few of the behind the scene photos of animals that are CURRENTLY in our care…if you are able to help, now would be the time.
