Math Makes Movement — a national math literacy campaign — is a fully collaborative, locally grounded and nationally connected coalition that unites educators, families, and community leaders to build strong math foundations, grow America’s math literacy and confidence, and remove systemic barriers so learners — from elementary through high school — can access opportunities in the future economy.

🔎 What's a Key Mover?
A Key Mover is an organization or community partner that has taken a concrete step to advance math literacy in their community — by signing up, attending sessions, sharing resources, hosting events, or formally adopting the Math Makes Movement framework. Math Makes Movement was a proud partner at the 10th Annual Flagway National Tournament & Math Playground at MIT in Cambridge, MA — and what a milestone it was!

Flagway is more than a game. It builds number sense, confidence, and belonging. And events like this one remind us why math literacy isn't just an academic goal — it's a community one.

We’re not just trying to raise the ceiling of excellence in math – we’re focused on raising the floor so that all students get a strong baseline in math literacy. And guess what: a rising tide lifts all ships.

When we lift up the students who are struggling most, everyone benefits. Higher achievers soar even higher, and our whole society gains a more mathematically confident, capable generation.

How do we open the doors to advanced math for all students?

One example: the Accessible Calculus Project in Englewood, NJ places college mentors in high school algebra classes to help teach in new, relatable ways. These near-peer mentors emphasize student voice and creativity – encouraging teens to imagine, explore, and discuss ideas with a younger role model in the room.

The result? High schoolers gain a deeper understanding of algebra and confidence to tackle calculus next.

When we say “no student shut out,” this is what it looks like in practice.

Math Makes Movement (M3) is building something big: a national math literacy campaign that’s locally grounded in communities across Americaalgebra.org.

We’re uniting educators, families, and leaders to remove barriers and build math confidence for learners from elementary through high schoolalgebra.org. Early focus: Florida, Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, Massachusetts – we’re rallying champions in these states to spark a wave of change.

This vision from the Algebra Project’s founder (and civil rights icon) inspires us every day. We believe math literacy is a movement, one that fights to bring quality education to the students who have been left out. In 2026, let’s continue the “radical” work of uplifting those at the bottom – because every student deserves the chance to succeed.

Your Experience Counts (Literally!).

Math class shouldn’t ask you to check your identity at the door. We believe your unique lived experiences are inherently mathematical. Becoming a “mathematician” doesn’t mean changing who you are – it means recognizing the math in your own story. Cultural context, everyday life, and personal experience can all be rich starting points for math learning. When students see themselves in math, engagement soars. Time to dispel the myth of “I’m not a math person.”

Math isn’t an innate talent reserved for a few – everybody can do math with the right support and mindset. In fact, math extends far beyond the classroom, touching every aspect of our lives. We all have a rightful place in the world of numbers.

Let’s replace “I can’t do math” with “I’m learning math,” and support each other along the way. (For tips on building math confidence, follow us!)

Did you know math often acts as a gatekeeper in education?

Research shows mathematics contributes significantly to educational equity. Students have unequal access to quality math curricula and teachers, and too often those hurt most are Black, Latinx, Native American, and low-income students.
