A Crisis Within A Crisis 📢
Housing Navigator is proud to collaborate with the Massachusetts Statewide Independent Living Council (MASILC) and the 10 Independent Living Centers (ILCs) on the newly released "A Crisis within a Crisis, Revisited" report. This partnership is essential to ensuring fairness, accessibility, and equity are embedded in housing and technology.
The report uses new data, including information from our housing search platform, to analyze the urgent shortage of accessible, deeply affordable rental housing for people with disabilities across the Commonwealth.
Key Findings on Accessible Housing Supply:
The data shows that while overall accessible unit supply grew, critical needs—deep affordability and family-sized units—continue to fall short for those who need them most:
🔎 Overall Accessible Supply: Accessible units in our listings increased by 5% over the last year, from 10,246 units to 10,755 units.
🔎 Deeply Affordable Gap: The proportion of accessible units that are Deeply Affordable (rent based on income) has slightly dropped, currently representing 57.6% of the accessible inventory. This highlights a growing need for units matching the lowest incomes.
🔎 Family Unit Shortage: The proportion of accessible units with two or more bedrooms (2+BR) also saw a slight drop, now standing at 34.5%. This is a critical barrier for families and those needing space for care arrangements.
🎯 The goal is clear: Creating more accessible affordable housing is critical to allow people with disabilities and elders to live in the communities of their choice and maintain their independence.
We encourage policymakers, housing developers, and advocates to read the full report to understand how to better target resources toward this urgent need.
