Future of Life Institute The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is a nonprofit working on reducing extreme risks and steering transformative technologies to benefit humanity.

The Institute's work is made up of three main strands: grantmaking for risk reduction, educational outreach, and advocacy within the United Nations, US government and European Union institutions. Following our UN High-level Week reception hosted by Nigeria 🇳🇬 earlier this week, we're highlighting the four main points speakers drove home:

➡️ States must move urgently to launch treaty negotiations, in order to preserve human control in armed conflict.
➡️ Technical safeguards will never be enough. We have shown that the systems used today are fallible, but even if they were not, we still need multilateral agreements to save lives.
➡️ There is high-level cross-regional political support for this action.
➡️ It's not a question of if we will act, but when. The answer? Now.

An OpenAI model being tested decided the fastest way to pass was to hack another company.

No one told it to, and it wasn’t supposed to even be able to access the internet.

It did anyway.

Several major AI companies have recently disclosed AI loss-of-control incidents, totaling nearly a dozen - and the companies themselves admit they don't know how to prevent them... while building more and more risky systems.
