Friends of the Grand Junction Path

Friends of the Grand Junction Path Shifting the urban mobility paradigm by bringing a rail-with-trail multi-use path to the Grand Junction corridor in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.

The Grand Junction multi-use path will integrate Boston University, Cambridgeport, MIT, Kendall Square, and East Cambridge, and ultimately connect with the planned Community Path extension in Somerville. A dedicated North-South route will offer bicycle, wheelchair, skate, leash, stroller, and foot travelers a useful, safe, comfortable, and interesting new urban route. The Friends of the Grand Junc

tion Path serves as a hub and networking tool for groups and citizens looking to engage with this project. Our diverse membership are active in many advocacy and industry spaces, and passionately welcome new interested members.

The William Red Overpass is near but not on the BU Bridge)

"The proposed project consists of removing the existing William Reid Overpass, which, though safe for all users, has reached the end of its useful lifespan and should be replaced, with either a reconstructed intersection of Memorial Drive and Brookline Street and a new overpass or a reconstructed intersection in which Memorial Drive and Brookline Street would cross each other at-grade. The project also proposes replacing the bridge carrying Memorial Drive over the Grand Junction Railroad Line. Additional goals of this project include significant enhancements to bicycle and pedestrian connectivity at the intersection and consolidation of transportation assets to return space to accessible parkland if possible."

A Public Informational Meeting will be held by MassDOT to discuss the proposed project in Cambridge, MA.

Tues 7/14, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. - Squires Bridge Replacement Deign Public Meeting (via Zoom) - and also between Poplar Street in Somerville and Third Street in Cambridge.

MassDOT invites you to attend a virtual Public Information Meeting to share design updates for the Squires Bridge Replacement Project – Rot28 over MBTA, and to provide an opportunity for public feedback as the project advances.

The proposed project consists of replacement of the bridge, commonly referred to as the “Squire’s Bridge”, carrying McGrath Hwy (Route 28) over the MBTA Commuter Rail Fitchburg Line, Union Branch of the Green Line, and Grand Junction railroad tracks in Somerville, MA.

The project also includes roadway reconstruction of McGrath Hwy & O’Brien Hwy (Route 28) between Poplar Street in Somerville and Third Street in Cambridge.

The proposed design will provide a single bridge span over the railroad with no intermediate supports and will provide a separate bridge span to the north passing over Somerville Ave Extension, which will be re-aligned to improve neighborhood connectivity. In addition to replacing the bridge, the project focuses on improving community connectivity between different neighborhoods and accommodation for all roadway users through provision, expansion, and enhancement of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities.

The project also includes safety improvements, increased green space, physical separation of bicycles and pedestrians from motor vehicles wherever feasible.
