Long Shadows Charitable Foundation

Long Shadows Charitable Foundation Helping horses, helping people. At LSCF, we offer a safe, healthy, and trusting environment for horses to heal their physical and emotional health.

LSCF is dedicated to helping horses in need, and partnering with the Thoroughbred racing industry to provide forever homes, and second careers to racehorses at the ends of their careers. Long Shadows Charitable Foundation (“LSCF”) is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt public charity as determined by the Internal Revenue Service serving the Greater Capital Region and surrounding areas. LSCF is dedicated to he

lping horses in need and partnering with the Thoroughbred racing industry to provide forever homes and second careers to racehorses at the ends of their careers. Through gentle, natural care and re-training, horses will be given a purposeful life, like becoming an equine partner in equine-assisted coaching programs. The power of horses to heal people is well-documented through research and programs that continue to inspire, motivate, challenge, and heal individuals, families, teens, and veterans at Long Shadows. Some horses will have a “forever home” at LSCF surrounded by love and care. Horses receive veterinarian care, dental care, regular, routine farrier visits, bathing and grooming. Through the work and dedication of the individuals involved in the day-to-day operations of LSCF, including trained and knowledgeable volunteers, the dignity of the horses is restored and their magical powers to help and heal people is allowed to flourish.

A decade of Long Shadows. 🤍

Since 2016, 21 horses have come to call Long Shadows home. Every horse who has walked through our gates has left a mark on our hearts, and we’re so thankful to share this journey with all of you.

Here’s to the memories we’ve made, the horses we’ve helped, and all the chapters still ahead.

Last week we worked on the beginning stages of lateral
movement.

This week we’re putting those pieces together and teaching him how to confidently side over to the mounting block.

Exercises like this are about so much more than mounting. They help teach horses to stay soft, think through pressure, and become less reactive when they feel unsure. You can really see Cheese starting to understand the concept and search for the right answer instead of getting frustrated by it.

These slower foundation moments may not look flashy, but they’re such an important part of building a confident riding horse.

Thanks for following along with his progress!

Teaching lateral movement isn’t always linear.

Cheese is learning… Barbie thinks she already mastered it 😂

Who did it better?

..just one bale?

Help Us Turn $3,500 Into $7,000 Worth of Hay for the Horses!

Even small gifts make a difference — a $10 or $20 donation helps put hay in front of a horse and moves us closer to reaching the match.
The Jana Domino Thoroughbred Foundation has generously offered a $3,500 matching gift toward our 2026 hay supply. Every dollar donated will be doubled until the full match is reached.
Hay is one of the most essential parts of caring for the horses at the sanctuary. From retired Thoroughbreds to our longtime sanctuary residents, every horse here depends on a steady supply of quality hay year-round.
Our goal is to raise $3,500 to unlock the full match, bringing the total to $7,000 worth of hay for the horses.
If you’d like to help us reach this goal, please contribute below and help spread the word.

A training moment with Fleeting Free “Cheese” from the Long Shadows Thoroughbred Aftercare Program, currently in training with Tabitha of Fire Feather Performance Horses.

Training isn’t always about getting the perfect response right away. Sometimes the most important moments happen in the tension before the understanding.

In this clip, Cheese is learning to disengage the hindquarters while circling at the trot. As pressure is introduced, his response is to speed up, brace rather than soften through his body. Instead of increasing pressure or forcing the movement, the goal becomes allowing him time to search for the answer without overwhelming him.

These moments matter. Tension, confusion, and increased movement are often part of the learning process, especially with sensitive horses learning how to regulate pressure and emotion at the same time.

The release doesn’t come from making the horse submit to the movement. It comes from finding the moment the horse begins to mentally soften, process, and let go.

Every horse has a story in the way they respond. Learning to listen is part of the process.

A sad day today at Long Shadows. We had to say goodbye to our tough little cookie Herbie🩵 Thank you to everyone who helped pay for her treatments. She was a resilient little girl with special friends and lots of endearing quirks and qualities. 💦
