Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians

Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians Founded in 1988, "Pride in preserving our history, enhancing our culture and maintaining our traditions through education; now and for generations to come."

A group of about 300 people are descendants of the original Nanticoke Indians, whose home was/is the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Our name, Nause-Waiwash (nah-soo WAY-wash), is a reference to two Nanticoke ancestral villages. Based in Dorchester County, Maryland, the Nause-Waiwash are the remnants of what Europeans call Nanticoke, Choptank and Pocomoke tribes who fled into the marshes in the 1700s.

These three names (Nanticoke, Choptank and Pocomoke) are the names of the three major rivers in the area, which are tributaries of the majestic Chesapeake Bay. We were first "discovered" by the famous Captain John Smith during his exploration of the Chesapeake Bay in 1609, and are well documented in his writings and history books everywhere.

Spot says it's a beautiful day on Delmarva!

If you didn't know, Chief Wolf Mother has a leopard appaloosa named Spot. When it was easier for him to get around, Spot was one of the main characters at festival. ✨

The Delmarva Discovery Museum has updated its website to include a page about the "Stories of Village Life" mural, which was created in close collaboration with our neighbors, the Pocomoke Indian Nation.

Good check it out, and learn about the creation of the mural, its subject matter, and the surrounding exhibit.

While the photos are beautiful, they do not capture the true scale of the exhibit. The mural is much more impressive in person. We recommend taking a trip down to Pocomoke and seeing it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Our mission is to foster an appreciation of Delmarva’s unique natural and cultural heritage through education, exploration, and enjoyment.

Letter From The Secretary

To our enrolled members who are eligible to vote:

Elections are in January! I know that is still months away. However in the previous few elections we have had minimal turn out. We need you! Without you, progress does not happen.

You aren't happy with decisions that are being made? You don't like how things happen? You just want to be informed and involved? Come to a meeting (the next one is scheduled for June), get involved, and get nominated.

This is a Council election, so anyone over the age of 18 male or female can vote.

While nothing has been formally brought before the Council yet, some people want to see the Council go from 7 to 5 members. We have over 300 enrolled members, of all ages. There is no reason we should not be able to have a full council of 7. Additionally, there is an 8th position, the Youth Advisor. While the Youth Advisor does not get to vote, and is not a member of Council, their voice is crucial and wanted. The Youth Advisor is typically between 15-20.

Please note, I understand that a few of you do not participate for a multitude of reasons. You do not have to like the people, processes, decisions being made around you. You have to tolerate them long enough to change it. IF NO ONE DOES THE HARD WORK, NOTHING WILL GET BETTER. Leaving the hard work for the next generation does not serve us or them. We need to lead by example. We need to do better as a community.

If you have any questions, feel free to email the secretary at [email protected]

Thank you kindly.

We were honored and excited to be a part of Talbot 250!
