🏛️ HISTORIC SPOTLIGHT: McCracken-McFarland House

Sitting at 216 North 8th Street, the building we know today as the Guernsey County History Museum has been part of Cambridge's story for roughly 200 years.

The McCracken-McFarland House dates to the 1820s and is associated with William McCracken, one of Cambridge's early civic leaders. McCracken came to Cambridge as a young blacksmith and went on to become a prominent member of the growing community. The house is an early example of Greek Revival-influenced architecture, and very few buildings from this period remain in Cambridge today.

In 1868, the home was purchased by Rev. Dr. William H. McFarland, who had come to Cambridge to serve the United Presbyterian Church. McFarland also served as a chaplain during the Civil War before returning to Cambridge. The home remained with the McFarland family for nearly a century.

But here's something you might not know: the house hasn't always stood exactly where you see it today! 👀

In 1915, the house was moved to its present location on North 8th Street. The National Register documentation notes that no records have been found explaining the move, adding another interesting piece of mystery to the building's long history.

In 1966, the McFarland family presented the home to the Guernsey County Historical Society, which transformed it into the museum we know today. Then, in 1979, the McCracken-McFarland House was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for both its architecture and its connection to Cambridge's early history.

Today, the house continues doing something it's been doing for generations—keeping Cambridge's stories alive. 🧡

The next time you pass the Guernsey County History Museum, remember: you're looking at a piece of Cambridge history that has survived for approximately two centuries...and even made a move along the way!

No agenda. No rushing. Just a little time to enjoy downtown. 🧡

Take a Sunday stroll down Wheeling Avenue, admire the buildings around you, peek into a shop window, grab a bite to eat, or simply enjoy the slower pace of the day.

Downtown doesn't always have to be about what's happening next. Sometimes it's about appreciating what's already here.

So take your time today.

🎬 THEN & NOW: The State Theatre

If these walls could talk, they would have plenty of stories to tell!

The building we know today as the Scottish Rite Auditorium at 935 Wheeling Avenue was once the State Theatre, one of Downtown Cambridge's movie houses.

The State Theatre opened on April 3, 1937, operated by Shea Theatres. Historical theater records list the original auditorium at approximately 1,060 seats, making it a significant entertainment destination in Cambridge.

But here's where the story gets even more interesting.

After the Cambridge Scottish Rite's previous home was destroyed by fire in 1968, the organization purchased the State Theatre property from Shea Theatre Corporation around 1970. The property included both the theater and the neighboring McMahon House. The Scottish Rite dedicated its new home in 1971—but that didn't mean the end of movie nights! 🎥

An agreement allowed the theater company to continue showing movies there while the Scottish Rite used the auditorium at designated times. At that point, the renovated theater had 600 seats on the main floor and 307 in the balcony, along with dressing rooms and a stage originally designed to accommodate live productions.

Movies continued at the State for years afterward, with the theater ultimately closing as a movie house around 1990. The building, however, survived and remains the Scottish Rite Auditorium, continuing its long history as a gathering and entertainment space.
