On April 15th, HRI staff and board joined Massachusetts Association of CDCs annual Lobby Day on Beacon Hill. We were deeply inspired to gather with peers from all over the state for a rousing keynote speech by Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell

Executive Director Sara Barcan, Community Engagement Case Manager Darriel Williams, and board member Jenny Andre-Jean met with Senator Pat Jehlen, Senator Will Brownsberger, and Representative Marjorie Decker, as well as members of their staff. We advocated on behalf of funding for Mass Save, MRVP, RAFT, and Get the Lead Out. Thank you to the Cambridge legislative delegation for your support!

Applications for our Locally Led Brave Spaces are open, and this is the final week to apply!

Now in our 4th annual session, Brave Spaces continues to grow each year, bringing together community members for meaningful conversation and connection. Organized by local Cambridge residents and staff, this initiative is rooted in community leadership and shared experiences.

Sessions will be held every first Tuesday from May through August 6 PM. (Food, childcare and translations provided as necessary)

This year’s sessions will focus on:
• Grief and loss
• Understanding trauma
• Strengthening self-care practices

These sessions are open to the public. If you or someone you know would benefit from these topics, we encourage you to apply and share this opportunity.

Special thanks to Riverside Community Care for helping facilitate this year’s sessions.

We’re excited to officially introduce our Financial Capability Program!

This program is designed to support our residents in building the skills and confidence needed to take control of their finances. Through hands-on workshops, one-on-one support, and guided goal setting, HRI residents will explore topics like budgeting, saving, credit building, and long-term financial planning.

In collaboration with Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee (CEOC), we’re proud to bring this opportunity to our community. We kicked things off earlier this month with an incredible 54 participants at our opening orientation. An amazing start!

We’re looking forward to supporting each participant and tracking their progress as they continue their financial journey toward greater stability and independence.

As participants move through the program, they'll also become eligible for our matched savings program, helping them turn their goals into real financial change!

It's hard to believe we're nearly through Q1 2026! As winter turns to spring, we want to take one more moment to reflect on what our team accomplished in 2025 under our brand-new strategic plan.

From affordable housing projects in Baldwin and Inman Square, to new and expanded programs and initiatives that support resident financial stability and well-being, our work reached deeper into the community than ever before. We also strengthened HRI’s organizational foundation through our merger with CNAHS, and updates to our by-laws.

We’ve made great strides in year one of our strategic plan: building homes, programs, systems, and community connections! We're excited to continue this momentum through 2026.

This season, here at HRI we were honored to distribute approximately $320,000 in grocery store gift cards to support about 1,500 households across our portfolio! Each household received $100 per bedroom, helping ensure support reflected family size and need.

Thanks to our generous donors at the Cambridge Savings Bank and HRI's board and staff this was made possible. At the heart of our work are people, their stories, their needs, and their everyday lives. Access to essentials shouldn't be a stressor, especially during the holidays.

Its moments like these that remind us how impactful simple, thoughtful resources can be. We are grateful to be able to show up in ways that truly matter for our residents.

Last month, HRI and our Resident Leaders attended the NeighborWorks America CLI Conference in Minnesota. The conference offered powerful insights, fresh ideas, and renewed motivation. Giving our leaders a chance to learn, connect, and bring home strategies to strengthen our Brave Spaces sessions. We're excited to carry this momentum forward.

Stay tuned for updates on the 2026 Brave Spaces! We can't wait to share what's next.

On Thursday, HRI invited the 4 Mellen team to sign a steel beam that will forever be a part of the new construction portion of the project. This is an exciting milestone as it signifies that NEI is ready to start framing the building - 29 units of affordable housing, here we come!

Thank you to our partners: NEI General Contracting, ICON Architechture, Tierney Development Services LLC, Massachusetts Housing Partnership, Citizens, City of Cambridge (Official)

Since 2006, the Peter Daly Scholarship Program has awarded $2.3 million dollars to 237 HRI residents.

From first generation college students to adult learners returning to school, our recipients reflect the strength and diversity of our community. This year's applicants represented a wide range of ages and backgrounds with approximately 1/3 of the students being over the age of 24.

As HRI's community engagement team has grown, so has our ability to market and promote this scholarship program throughout our portfolio. Our team connects with families and students of all ages to encourage them to apply, as well as collaborating regularly with community partners who work with Cambridge students.

Swipe through to explore the program's impact, hear from this year's recipients and view our growth over the years.

Then, join us THIS THURSDAY, July 31st to celebrate our 2025 awardees at the annual Neighbor to Neighbor Block Party!
