Board Member Spotlight: Dr. Katherine Gergen Barnett🌟

Dr. Katherine Gergen Barnett is a family medicine physician and nationally recognized leader whose work connects patient care, health policy, and community engagement.

With more than 20 years of leadership experience, she has helped develop approaches that integrate behavioral health, address trauma, and expand access to addiction treatment. She also advises state and national initiatives focused on health care policy, Medicaid, and payment reform.

Through her writing, research, and media commentary, Dr. Gergen Barnett shares solutions to some of the biggest challenges in American health care.

Her work reflects a commitment to rebuilding trust in medicine and making primary care a foundation of healthier communities. We're excited to highlight leaders like her who are helping move the conversation about primary care forward! ❤️

What if one of the things that could bring us together is something we all need: a primary care doctor we know and trust.👩‍⚕️

In a new editorial in the American Journal of Public Health, PC4AA President Michael Fine, MD, and board member Sara Pastoor, MD, MHA, explore primary care as more than a part of the health care system, but as something every community should be able to count on.

Their vision is straightforward: every person in America has a personal primary care physician, and every neighborhood and community has a great primary care team.

That means changing how we think about, fund, and advocate for primary care, and building support for it in communities across the country.

Is the primary care workforce shortage just a question of having enough residency slots? 🤔

Not quite.

During our latest Teach-In/Learn-In, Lawson Mansell, Senior Health Policy Analyst at the Niskanen Center, addressed a question about what it actually takes to encourage more medical students to choose primary care. Lawson works on policies aimed at improving the supply of affordable health care, bringing a policy perspective to the conversation around the primary care workforce.

His answer: there’s no single fix. We need to look at the incentives that shape career choices, from student debt to physician compensation, and the infrastructure that determines whether programs can grow.

And when it comes to funding primary care, Lawson made one thing clear: Medicare has to be part of the conversation.💬

By 2038, the U.S. could face a shortage of more than 70,000 primary care physicians.

That could mean longer waits, fewer doctors accepting new patients, and more people struggling to find a regular source of care.

2038 may sound far away, but building a strong primary care workforce takes years.
The time to address the workforce crisis is now.⏳️

Sometimes, “I’m fine” really does mean fine.

And sometimes, it takes someone who knows you to notice when it doesn’t.🧐

That’s one of the things that makes primary care so important. When you have a trusted doctor who knows your history and sees you over time, they can ask the extra question, notice the small changes, and create space for the conversations that matter.

Primary care is more than a visit. It’s a relationship.

Board Member Spotlight: Margaret I. Gradie, PhD🌟

Meet Margaret Gradie, a public health leader dedicated to strengthening rural health systems and expanding the primary care workforce.

Dr. Gradie currently serves as a Lead Planning Analyst with the Connecticut Department of Public Health. She previously served as Chief of the Office of Primary Care and Rural Health for the State of Rhode Island and as Director of the Northeast Telehealth Resource Center.

Beyond bringing her public health expertise to the PC4AA board, Margaret also helps support the movement behind the scenes by facilitating meetings, helping with administrative work, and contributing to the many pieces that keep our growing network moving forward.🩺🌐

We’re grateful to have Margaret’s expertise, energy, and commitment as part of the PC4AA team!

💰 More than $21 billion a year goes toward Medicare’s Graduate Medical Education payments, the federal government’s largest investment in physician training.

But the formula behind those payments is nearly 40 years old.

And we’re still facing a growing mismatch between where doctors train, where they practice, and where they’re needed most.

If we want primary care in every neighborhood and community, we need to rethink how we invest in training the clinicians our communities need.

Public dollars should work for the public.
