The situation with Jemele Hill, Jerry Jones, Donald Trump and Black lives in America is a real troubling one...and one of hope for a better America.
The front page of US Today this morning has an article about how VA Hospitals are letting down our veterans wounded overseas. So Trump is making a big deal of respecting the flag and supporting our troops while not increasing supports for wounded veterans? Doesn't add up.
Also, it has become clear to me that NFL does not care about the lives and experiences of their black players outside of the playing field. What Jerry Jones is expressing in Dallas is the downside of the integration of professional sports in America. Even though it is a separate sport, the Negro Leagues showcased black athletes, black ownership of teams, embraced black fans and was an integral part of the of the black community. What we have now is the opposite.
By not allowing Black players to express their first amendment rights, Jerry Jones is indicating that he doesn't care about how Black people, even his own players, are treated in America. If Jerry Jones doesn't know about Fred Hampton, cointelpro, the fugitive slave act, Plessy vs. Ferguson or myriad other experiences that impact how Black and Brown people understand "the land of the free", then Jemele Hill is right; we should be protesting the NFL and its sponsors.
However, I would be the first one to NFL.com to buy an Elliot or Prescott jersey if they called Jerry on his bluff and kneeled during the anthem. The players have the power in this situation...and always have. It is their experience and the experiences of other disenfranchised Black and Brown people that we need to hear from if we want America to indeed be the "land of the free."

The network said the host of SportsCenter violated social media guidelines when she weighed in on the controversy around NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.
