Cambridge Neighbors

Cambridge Neighbors Cambridge Neighbors is a nonprofit, membership organization that helps local residents live vibrant and healthy lives as they grow older.

Since 2007, Cambridge Neighbors (CN) has been at the forefront of the national aging-in-place movement, providing both practical and social supports to those who want to remain in their homes and communities as they age for as long as they are able. Membership-based and directed, CN is a “neighborhood association” that organically creates community and enables participants to support one another.

CN staff works closely with members to organize, coordinate and facilitate relevant and meaningful services and programs. Practical supports include access to volunteer-based services such as rides to medical appointments, friendly visiting/callers, tech assistance, handyman services, and errand running. Members are also able to access our vetted list of local service providers and vendors, many of whom offer a discount. Social supports include social gatherings via dinners and cocktail parties, interest groups, cultural excursions, and educational presentations. Members are also able to participate in CN-sponsored exercise classes run by certified instructors.*

Cambridge Neighbors serves Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Somerville, and Watertown. For more information, please visit our website at www.cambridgeneighbors.org.
*During the duration of the COVID pandemic, all programs are held virtually, except for our Six-Foot Strolls walking group.

Welcome, A***n Liao!

We are delighted to welcome Adrian, our new Assistant Director here at Cambridge Neighbors!

With a background in piano performance, Adrian discovered a love for engaging with people in intimate settings while performing in retirement communities during college. She later attended a Bible truth and service program, where her passion for working with people continued to grow. Through outreach in shopping centers, parks, and diverse communities, she gained experience engaging with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and developed a heart for people, along with a strong affinity for mentorship and personal connection. After returning to the Greater Boston area and settling in Cambridge, Adrian worked closely with college students, planning events and programs while also providing one-on-one mentorship. She is passionate about fostering environments where people feel supported and able to thrive.

Adrian chose to join Cambridge Neighbors because of her desire to make a meaningful, positive impact in people's daily lives. She hopes to contribute a joyful outlook and create experiences that make members' lives easier, richer, and more connected. In her free time, Adrian enjoys running, baking, and exploring new matcha spots and restaurants with friends. More than anything, she simply loves being with the people she cares about.

It cannot be overstated that volunteers are central to Cambridge Neighbors’ mission and culture, fostering mutual support among members and throughout the community. As the son of a member recently shared, “Cambridge Neighbors has been integral to my mother’s ability to remain in her home these past three years. We will be forever grateful for the kindness of the three volunteers who brought her groceries—Alain, Agnes, and Kathleen. Thank you for the work you all do.”

Transportation is at the top of the list of volunteer services we provide, second to request for tech help.

Cambridge Neighbors members appreciate the opportunity to learn through our many educational programs. Recently, we held a series in partnership with the Cambridge Public Library on Empowerment in Later Years presented by Cheryl Field, MSN, RN, and CRRN. A member wrote:

"I attended the end of life planning session which was very through and clear. The presenter was excellent, so knowledgeable, and very clear. This is a great service."

Providing a supportive, caring, and inclusive community is an important part of Cambridge Neighbors' mission. Members can participate in a variety of programming and activities that ultimately combat the mental and physical health implications of loneliness and isolation. In 2025, we offered 269 programs that promoted healthy aging, covered later-life topics, and offered an array of cultural/social events. Jeremy Nobel, MD/PhD, who teaches a course on loneliness and public health at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health thinks, “The health care system, in particular, can play an essential role by referring patients to community resources that can help them overcome [loneliness and isolation].” *

Cambridge Neighbors and the Robbins Library in Arlington join forces

Cambridge Neighbors was pleased to cosponsor an Author Talk with Scott Kerman, featuring a discussion of his latest book, The Duke, a tribute to former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis.

Mr. Kerman provided an entertaining and unique perspective on Governor Dukakis through humor and personal reflection, exploring the unexpected moments that arise when a political leader and a comedian share a kitchen. Attendees gained fresh insight into the life and character of a presidential candidate, three-term Governor of Massachusetts, community role model, advocate for rail travel, and outspoken opponent of littering.

A special thank you to Cambridge Neighbors member, J.B. Maxwell, who made this event possible.
