Summer Session Spotlight - Colin Britt

This interactive session will explore elements of vocal placement and apply those concepts to specific repertoire. Using vocal exercises, vowel tuning/placement, and ensemble games like the Choral EQ Slider, participants will focus on technique and resonance, before having the opportunity to try out different approaches on sung examples with the group. Repertoire will include music from the traditional Western canon, Eastern Europe, Gospel and Spirituals, repertoire influenced by Indian classical singing, and contemporary/Broadway rep. By including music from non-Western traditions and incorporating the exploration of vocal technique beyond Bel Canto singing, this session encourages participants to approach diverse repertoire with authenticity, creativity, and respect.

Special Session! Join us this summer for an interest session given by Melanie Trecek-King (Thinking Is Power) that will challenge us to consider the ways we dialogue with our students and how we discuss and consider facts and critical thinking in our classrooms.

Have you ever tried to win an argument with a mountain of evidence, only to have the other person dig in their heels? It turns out that providing more information is rarely the solution, especially when identity or emotions are on the line. To have truly productive conversations— especially on polarized topics— we have to look under the hood at how our brains process information. This session explores why facts alone are often insufficient, why people are so resistant to changing their minds and, most importantly, learn practical strategies for bridging the gap. By understanding the mental processes that drive belief, you will be empowered to navigate disagreements more effectively, fostering a culture of critical thinking in your classroom and beyond.

We are seeking sessions that speak to all aspects of choral music and are especially looking for presenters who can actively engage participants in hands-on experiences with resources and activities that they can bring directly back to their rehearsal spaces.
