Sprouts of Hope

Sprouts of Hope We get involved with environmental and humanitarian issues in our school and community. We have been a part of Roots & Shoots since January 2007.

We are the Sprouts of Hope, a Cambridge (MA) based Roots and Shoots group, part of a youth-focused organization founded by Dr. Jane Goodall (www.rootsandshoots.org). Right now the Sprouts of Hope consists of five girls, Kaya, Eliza, Risa, Maya, and Lilly, who are all currently in 9th and 10th grade. Our motto, "Have a dream, make a difference" was created at our first meeting on Martin Luther King

Day! You can contact us through our page or read about our many projects and interests on our blog (www.sproutsofhopekids.blogspot.com). To give ALL kids a chance to experience Roots and Shoots, we donated money we raised in a yardsale we organized in May 2008. With our contribution, the New England chapter started this fund to help pay the membership fee ($50.00 per year) and provide other support to families and kids who want to start a Roots & Shoots group but don't have the necessary funds. Since the fall of 2008, there have been 17 Roots & Shoots groups created with the help of this fund. :)

We also have helped to start a Roots & Shoots group--the Brotes de Esperanza (which means Sprouts of Hope in Spanish!) We have helped to mentor these younger kids, enlightening them with knowledge on our planet Earth.

At our 6th quilt meeting with Clara, we began to add detail to the city. Windows, clotheslines, gardens, and wind turbines went up on the rooftops. Kaya created a peace dove representing the many peace dove parades we have been a part of through Roots and Shoots. The dove flies with a banner behind ...

Last night the sprouts went to see disney nature movie, CHIMPANZEE, featuring and adorable chimp named Oscar. The movie was funny, inspiring and a lot of fun. I definitely would recommend going to see it in theaters!

We are happy to announce that our school is introducing compostable bioware in our cafeterias in partnership with the schools’ Food Services Department. CRLS hopes to expand this initiative, and to be able to offer biodegradable products that can be placed into compost bins in all their cafeterias. This initiative to “green” CRLS’ cafeterias is run in partnership with the Department of Public Works, and the city hopes to expand this program to every school.
