Kathy Griffin on receiving the Distinguished Partner Award next week:

“I’m flattered to get the award. I went to Iraq and Afghanistan — I went before it was cool, before Bill O’Reilly,” Griffin said. “It was life-changing.”

Griffin, the daughter of a World War II veteran, has worked closely with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and fought to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

“The thing that shocked me the most about going over there, I think that most Americans who don’t have a military connection, when I looked in the audience for the first time, they really look like children. Helmets are off. I’m 52 now. So many of them were 17, 18, 19 years old,” she said. “I say: How can we say ‘thank you’? Making those folks and their families laugh is essential.”

Let us all take a moment today from the barbecues and outdoor parties to honor those who have lost their lives in defending the United States. A thank you also goes out to everyone in the US Armed Forces - active duty and retired.
