“We always loved music. I remember before we went to prison, I was at his (Jabir’s) house. We put on a Whispers album. His wife was in the kitchen–pregnant at the time.
We started singing along, really singing. She came out and said, ‘I didn’t know you two could sing like that. Y’all need to do that.’ We laughed.
And then we went to prison.
In the late 60s and early 70s, we were mentored by older guys who had singing groups. Those men eventually all went home or passed away. One day somebody said, ‘He knows how to do it.’ And they were pointing at me!
So we tried to pick up where they left off. That was the birth of music programs in the prison. Eventually, we formed the 'OGs'–the Original Gentlemen.” – 𝗘𝘅𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 talking about how he and fellow Exoneree Jabir Pope got their start performing as the OGs while wrongfully incarcerated.
