Welcome to HART, the Homeless Animal Rescue Team in Cambria, CA. We are a no-kill, cage free animal rescue and adoption center located on the beautiful Central Coast of California. HART’s mission is to rescue domestic animals in need, strays as well as cats who have lost their homes due to death or illness, and place them into good permanent homes. We also aim to eliminate unwanted surplus animals from being born in our immediate area through our active spay/neuter programs. OUR MISSION

HART is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (Federal ID 77-0018508). OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our philosophy is ensuring quality of life to all living creatures, both feral and domestic. OUR HISTORY
HART was founded in 1983 by a small core of volunteers who fostered animals in their own homes. Starting with Mika (a wayward cat in a family way), HART has placed thousands of homeless animals into permanent homes through adoption and foster programs. In 2000 HART acquired its own premises by renting a former veterinarian’s office, allowing us to expand our resources in the community. Our TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) programs have prevented countless more homeless animals. Through partnerships with educators and other rescue groups HART has helped to develop an effective Humane Education program that has been shared with local schools and communities. In 2012 HART purchased its current location at 2638 Main Street. For over 30 years the overwhelming constant characteristic of HART has been a team of volunteers dedicated to the welfare of the animals, first and always.

Clove is a handsome one-year-old brown tabby with striking charcoal swirls, sparkling green eyes, and a wonderful personality. Sweet, curious, and people-loving, he enjoys being around his humans and will happily follow you around like your own little shadow. Clove gets along well with other cats, although he can get a little “spicy” with more dominant personalities!

Clove is also FIV-positive, but that doesn’t slow him down one bit. FIV-positive cats can live long, happy lives and can safely share a home with peaceful, cat-friendly FIV-negative cats. FIV is spread primarily through deep bite wounds, not everyday activities like grooming, cuddling, or sharing food and litter boxes. Clove is simply looking for someone who will see him for the wonderful companion he is and give him a loving home. Come meet Clove at HART this week!

🐾 These kittens should be growing up in homes — not a shelter. 💚

Many of our kittens have already spent more than half of their lives at HART, growing bigger every day while they wait for their chance to be part of a family.

They’re ready for the fun stuff: exploring, playing, getting into kitten mischief, and curling up with their people. And because kittens thrive with a feline friend, we love sending them home in pairs! 🐱💕🐱

🐾 Our Cats Need You! 🙏 At HART, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. They feed hungry tummies, keep litter boxes clean, greet visitors with a smile, and—most importantly—give our cats the love and care they deserve. But life changes, and we often have to say goodbye to wonderful volunteers as they move on for their own reasons. Each time, it leaves a gap—not just for us, but for the cats who thrive on steady care and routine.

Right now, we’re in real need of extra hands because kitten season is in full swing. We are looking for volunteers to help with feeding and litter box duties almost every day of the week from 3–5 PM.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the purr-fect time. A couple of hours a week may not seem like much—but to our cats, it means the world. 🐱💞

Dolly is quiet, so she won’t be singing you a tune, but she has plenty of other ways to shine. 🎶 She is incredibly sweet and loving and absolutely craves adoration. It’s Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week, and today we’re shining a light on some of the cats who can be harder to find homes for simply because they’re shy or reserved. They may not rush to greet visitors, may take time to warm up, or might retreat when someone approaches. As a result, they can be passed over by adopters who choose the cat who is immediately outgoing and affectionate.

But there’s often much more to these cats than their first impression. A shelter can be an unfamiliar and overwhelming place, especially for a cat who has never experienced so many new people, sounds, smells, and other cats. Given a little time, patience, and a stable home, many shy cats gradually gain confidence and begin to show their true personalities. ❤️ And there’s something pretty special about earning the trust of a cat who once hid when you walked into the room.

A quiet cat may not be the first to greet you—but they may become the companion who follows you from room to room, curls up beside you, or quietly chooses your lap once they know they’re safe. Sometimes, all a shy cat needs is someone willing to take a chance on them and give them the time to become the wonderful companion they were meant to be.

HART is hosting a GOODWILL Drive! 🍂
Fall is the perfect time to purge unwanted clothes and household items. HART earns funds for every truck we fill, so we’re hoping to fill TWO trucks this year! Help us reach our goal by gathering your new or gently used, working items and bringing them to HART.

It’s Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week, and all this week HART is shining a spotlight on some of the cats who can take a little longer to find their people.

Next, we’re spotlighting our senior cats. At HART, cats are considered seniors at age 8, but they’re often overlooked by adopters who want more time with their cat. But at 8, a cat may still have many wonderful years ahead—cats can live well into their teens and even 20s (as is the case with Gracie and Bear!). Senior cats are often settled into their personalities, enjoy a good cuddle, and don’t require the constant supervision and playtime that kittens do. For some adopters, a mature cat can also be a great match for their own quieter stage of life.

And sometimes, a senior cat needs you just as much as you need them. Giving a senior cat a loving home for the rest of their life is a special kind of gift—and the companionship they give in return can be just as meaningful. HART’s Seniors for Seniors program makes adoption just $25 for adopters age 62 and older who choose a cat age 8 or older.

Sometimes the cats who are easiest to overlook turn out to be exactly the right match. 🏠❤️
