In this conversation with Barb Seaman, she talks about growing up with a “two-holer” outhouse in the backyard, catching crawdads along the Columbia River, and, as a young adult, going to work at the Crown Zollerbach paper mill. Public life sometimes feels a little frayed, don't you think? That's why ECCA creates projects where people can work alongside one another and get to know each other. HOW we actually can know other people authentically, in their strengths and in their struggles -- that's another topic. That's why we’re excited to partner with Weave: The Social Fabric Project for its national ''Big Read," where we're diving into David Brooks’ “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen.” The project runs from Oct.1-Nov. 5 and there will be lots of opportunities to explore the book together and put its ideas about connection, curiosity, and trust into practice. FORM YOUR OWN VOLUNTEER ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY TEAM! We need you. This fall, ECCA is finishing up its fourth year cleaning litter from Highway 14 from Washougal to E. Vancouver. We've learned a lot about the kind of trash that is routinely deposited on our local highways and where this trash comes from. (It's more complicated than you may think.) There are lots of potential solutions, but one PROVEN solution is simply having more Adopt-a-Highway teams to clean it up.

Here's a map we put together of all the sponsored sections of highway in the Washington State as of last month. (Click on the link if you want to open it up.) Most of these are volunteer teams; some are business sponsors that pay for professional cleanup. Most segments are 2 miles long or less.

There are very few teams in Clark County. Thus ... we have trash all over the place. This isn't a normal state of affairs, and we don't have to simply accept it. While we're working on other solutions, please CONSIDER CREATING YOUR OWN VOLUNTEER ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY TEAM. This is uplifting work; it keeps you in shape; and it creates great relationships. Dick Lindstrom was fresh out of the Navy in 1960 and looking for a job when his sister in Washougal told him the Camas paper mill was hiring. In this conversation with Julianne Lawrence, Dick talks about his nearly four decades at the mill, how the mill shaped the life of the entire region, and about events like the bitter 1964 strike that divided families and the broader community. In this excerpt, he describes why that strike was so devastating.

Another successful day out on Highway 14 in E. Vancouver cleaning up the huge volume of trash -- most of it plastic in one form or another -- that ends up out there. Thanks especially to our four new volunteers Walida, Barb, Dave, and Donna.

What a beautiful time we had yesterday hosting a "free wall" street art painting at Second Saturday at Riverside Skatepark. Adults and kids dived in and produced some beautiful art. Teachers were on hand to give pointers! Second Saturday is hosted every month by the City of Washougal.

Our volunteer team at ReFuel Washougal yesterday. Thanks Paula, Jess, Tyson, Pat, Walida, Diane, Earl and Shawn! We cooked up a bunch of chicken, made an enormous chili salad, and scooped a few gallons of ice cream -- voila, dinner for about 70. 😊
