In service to the Asian elephants and planet earth Voice for Asian Elephants Society bridges the gap between humans and Asian elephants and empowers shifts in perceptions in creating peaceful co-existence with each other and the elephants. We share knowledge, scientific inquiries, and deeper insights gathered from ancient wisdom and personal experiences with elephants through evocative writings, speaking engagements, and wilderness/ elephant experiences that nurture awe, empathy, and respect for all sentient beings, and gratitude for the abundance of gifts that the natural world continues to bestow upon humankind. Our first project is "Gods in Shackles" documentary that exposes the dark side of Kerala's glamorous cultural festivities and rituals that exploit captive elephants for profit under the guise of culture and religion, revealing the abhorrent torture these supremely gentle and intelligent animals suffer. One of the main intentions in producing this film is to create a deeper understanding of the behavior and social organization of Asian elephants, as well as their inherent abilities to feel and communicate. Using this film we aim to engage and educate key stakeholders, and equip the owners and handlers with positive reinforcement strategies that promote empathy and alleviate the pain and suffering of Kerala's captive elephants. Gods in Shackles is a feature length documentary film in the making, an exposè revealing the sordid secrets lurking beneath the glitz and glamour of Kerala's captive elephants used in festivities, and the exploitation of these supremely gentle and intelligent beings in the name of culture and religion. In this film, Sangita Iyer will take you through her personal journey that began in December 2013, when she traveled to her birthplace in Kerala, Southern India, and reconnected with her soul animals – these gentle giants. Her plan was to meet with world-renowned elephant scientists and gather research material for The Huffington Post. But after 10 days of witnessing festivities and temple rituals using male elephants inflicted with massive tumors, deep wounds, ripped ears, and even blindness, she knew that these animals needed help. What a breathtaking sight! 💙

After the monsoons, our waterholes at 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗱𝗮, 𝗥𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗵𝗶 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘-𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥—an incredible 𝟴–𝟭𝟬 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 in places!

And the most beautiful evidence is written in the mud around them: 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗣𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗦. 🐘🐾

They are coming back. They know where the water is. And when the scorching dry months return, these precious oases will be waiting for them.

These waterholes are more than pits filled with rain.

🙏 🐘💔 𝗜𝗙 𝗪𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗣𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗦, 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗢 𝗪𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗢𝗠?

This extraordinary reflection by Edward Topsell speaks volumes about something humanity has recognized for centuries: there is something profoundly awe-inspiring about an elephant.

And yet today, 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀—𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗮, 𝗕𝗶𝗷𝘂𝗹𝗶, 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗮, 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝘂𝗽𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴—𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝘂, robbed from the world they knew and sent to religious institutions where these precious elephants will spend their lives confined, controlled and used in temple rituals.

How did reverence become possession? How did devotion come to require removing these deeply intelligent, intensely social beings from everything an elephant naturally needs?

Perhaps the greatest way to honour the Divine is not to confine His magnificent creations—but to 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱. 🙏🌿

Elephants do not need to stand inside our temples for us to worship what they represent.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of an elephant’s suffering is not only what is done to them. It is 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁!
A magnificent being restrained. Controlled. Passed from one generation of human hands to another. And somewhere along the way, what should have shocked our conscience became familiar enough to defend.

But familiarity does not make suffering acceptable. Longevity does not make injustice sacred. And repetition does not make something right.

Elephants remember. They grieve. They form profound relationships. They have needs, desires and emotional worlds of their own.

For centuries, human beings have found meaning, belonging and spiritual connection through sacred rituals. But the most beautiful customs are those capable of 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Today, we have an extraordinary opportunity to choose differently.

A temple can still awaken wonder. Drums can still thunder. Festivals can still fill the streets. Families can still gather. Prayers can still rise.

🐘 🔥 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡. 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘. 𝗔 𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘.

Every one of us has the ability to 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. Perhaps not everything. Perhaps not overnight. But one compassionate choice can ripple outward—awakening another heart, challenging what has been normalized and inspiring someone else to act.

For captive elephants, our choices matter. They cannot petition governments, challenge traditions or expose the suffering inflicted upon them. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗘 𝗰𝗮𝗻. 🐘 💔

We can question. Educate. Share their stories. Refuse to support their exploitation. And perhaps reach that ONE person whose change of heart transforms an elephant’s life.

Never underestimate the ripple created by one compassionate act. 🌱 💚 Today, ask yourself:

🚨🐘 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗨𝗦?

There comes a point when 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. For generations, elephants have paid an unbearable price for what humans desire from them—their bodies, their obedience, their labour, their magnificence. And still, 𝘄𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 💔

These are beings who raise families, forge lifelong bonds, mourn their dead, remember those they love—and carry within them an ancient intelligence that evolved long before our modern world existed.

Yet their future can still be decided by 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. That should TERRIFY us. Because when we lose an elephant, we don't simply lose an animal.

𝗪𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. 𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆. 𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. 𝗔 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱.

💔 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗚𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗨𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗗?

There is an innocence in baby elephants, just as there is in all babies—an innocence that should be 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Young lives still unfolding. Spirits still discovering the world. Futures that should belong entirely to 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠. 🌿🐘

Yet somehow, human desires have become more important than their most fundamental right—the right to live the lives they were born to live.
And when the lives at stake are 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 elephant children, we cannot simply look away.

Having witnessed and documented the plight of India’s temple elephants firsthand—and exposed their hidden suffering to the world through her globally acclaimed documentary, 𝙂𝙤𝙙𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙨—our Founder, 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗜𝘆𝗲𝗿, shares deeply personal reflections on these five youngsters and asks us to confront what their fate says about 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.

🐘💚 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗢𝗠...

As millions celebrate 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗚𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮 this week, imagine honouring His living embodiment by allowing elephants to simply be. Elephants—free to roam, forage, socialize and make their own choices. 🙏

At Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Thailand, that vision is already a beautiful reality. Here, rescued elephants are given space, dignity and freedom, while elephant-friendly tourism supports sustainable livelihoods. Visitors simply observe these magnificent beings from a respectful distance. 🐘🌿

And THAT makes the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘅 even more heartbreaking.

In a world increasingly consumed by anger, division, war and conflict, it’s easy to wonder what difference one person can possibly make.
