National Police Dog Foundation By 2004, the volunteers became aware that many cities throughout the nation lacked budgets to fund K-9 programs.

Our mission is to honor the K9 heroes who have died in the line of duty, and to raise awareness and funds for the purchase, training, and emergency medical care of active and retired law enforcement K9s nationwide. In 1998, the National Police Dog Foundation began as the Ventura Police Dog Foundation, local group of volunteers with a mission to help fund the K-9 program for the City of Ventura Police Department (CA). Not only did police departments lack the initial funds to purchase and train a dog, many did not have a budget for serious medical issues. This continues to be the same circumstance today, so the foundation expanded and became the National Police Dog Foundation. The National Police Dog Foundation goal is to assist law enforcement agencies through funding to achieve their goals of providing a K-9 unit with quality police dogs and training. In addition, the Foundation has incorporated a network of veterinarians to help assist agencies with providing for maintenance care or emergency services. Equally important, the Foundation helps fund continued care for the police service dog after retirement. It is the mission of the National Police Dog Foundation to raise funds, promote education and awareness for the purchase, training and on-going veterinary care for active and retired police K-9s. We hope youā€™ll join us in this effort by supporting this noble cause.

The Foundation is proud to announce that we are officially accepting applications for our K9 Line-of-Duty Death National Memorial.

Behind every fallen K9 is a story of courage, loyalty, sacrifice, and an unbreakable bond with their handler.

Through this initiative, we are working to ensure that these extraordinary K9s receive the national recognition they deserve. Their names, stories, and sacrifices will be preserved for generations to come, including through a digital memorial tribute at the Nat'l Law Enforcement Memorial National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C.

We encourage law enforcement agencies and handlers across the country to submit their fallen K9s for consideration, including those lost in previous years.

ā¤ļø K9 Macho (pictured) of the Jefferson Parish Sheriffā€™s Office is one of the many heroes who remind us why this mission matters. After six years of dedicated service and more than 200 deployments, Macho tragically passed away following a medical emergency during a suspect apprehension in January 2025.

His story is a reminder that behind every badge carried by a K9 is a life devoted to protecting others.

K9 Macho, and the stories of so many heroes like him, will forever remain in our hearts. Their service will never be forgotten, and their sacrifices will never go unrecognized.

Today weā€™re celebrating the hardworking law enforcement K9s and handlers who show up, work hard, and serve their communities side by side every single day.

And speaking of coffee ā€” last month, you all purchased more than 7K bags of coffee through our Free Rein Coffee Company collaboration! That is incredible!! Every purchase helps us continue raising awareness and supporting police K9s across the country.

We were honored to attend the National Service Animals Monument 4th Annual Purple Poppy Awards, celebrating the extraordinary military working dogs, law enforcement K9s, search and rescue animals, and assistance animals whose loyalty, service, and sacrifice make such a lasting impact.

A heartfelt thank you to the NSAM for having us as your guests. Presented by the American Pet Products Association, this special evening supports the creation of the National Service Animals Monument in Washington, D.C. We were truly grateful to be part of such a meaningful event honoring these remarkable animals and the people who serve beside them.

Recently had the chance to visit the National Police Dog Foundation and learn more about the K-9s working alongside law enforcement every day. šŸ¾

These dogs do incredible work and it was great seeing the effort that goes into making sure they have the training and care they deserve.

On September 11, 2001, as our nation faced unimaginable tragedy, hundreds of K9 teams answered the call.

Search and rescue dogs climbed through unstable rubble at Ground Zero and the Pentagon, searching tirelessly for survivors. Recovery dogs continued the difficult work in the days and months that followed. Therapy and comfort dogs stood beside first responders and grieving families, providing something words often could not.

These remarkable dogs worked alongside their handlers through smoke, dust, debris, exhaustion, and heartbreak.

Some found survivors.
Some helped bring loved ones home.
Some simply offered a paw, a nudge, or a quiet presence when it was needed most.

Today, the National Police Dog Foundation remembers the nearly 3,000 lives taken on 9/11, the first responders who ran toward danger, and every K9 and handler who served in the aftermath.

Their courage reminds us that heroes come in many forms ā€” and sometimes, they have four legs.

September 11, 2001. We will never forget.

From tracking dangerous suspects and locating missing people to detecting narcotics and explosives, these four-legged officers put everything on the line without hesitation. Behind every K9 is also a dedicated handler, an incredible bond, and countless hours of training.

Quin, a black Labrador Retriever and Windham Countyā€™s first comfort and police K9, works alongside Officer Boulanger of the Putnam Police Department. From school visits and community events to providing comfort and stress relief within the department, Quin has an important job: helping people feel better simply by being there.

Not every K9 wears a patrol vest or tracks a suspect. Some have a different missionā€”to comfort, connect, and bring a little light to those who need it most.

Every life in service begins with trust, training, and an unbreakable bond between handler and partner.

The National Police Dog Foundation is honored to share the story of K9 Havoc, a 2.5-year-old Labrador serving with the Oxford Police Department and his handler, Officer Miranda Schoening.

During a routine training day in Opelika, Havoc suddenly became illā€”coughing, gagging, and refusing water, something completely out of character. Officer Schoening immediately recognized the signs of bloat, a life-threatening condition that can turn fatal within hours.

Trusting her instincts, she rushed Havoc to emergency care, where veterinarians confirmed the diagnosis and performed life-saving gastropexy surgery (stomach tacking) to prevent the condition from recurring.

Thanks to quick action, skilled veterinary care at MAC Animal Clinic , and the unwavering bond between handler and K9, Havoc survived and is now recovered.

Havocā€™s journey is a powerful reminder of the risks working K9s faceā€”and the heroes who stand beside them every day to protect and serve.

We are proud to have funded Havocā€™s surgery and sending good vibes to Officer Schoening and the Oxford Police Department as Havoc returns back to work.
