That 50% yield boost is only half the story. The roots of French marigolds release a chemical called alpha-terthienyl — a compound so persistent it keeps repelling microscopic worms in the soil for years after the plant is completely gone. The flower does not need to be alive to keep working. In greenhouse trials, tomato plants grown alongside marigolds also attracted significantly more pollinators — meaning the marigold was running two operations at once. Pest suppression below the surface. Pollinator magnetism above it. The tomato got the headline. The marigold did the labor. There is something worth sitting with in that. A plant that protects long after it is gone — most living things cannot manage that. The marigold does not ask for credit. It just quietly rewrites the chemistry of the soil and walks away.
