Our hearts are heavy. The Big Annie Committee recently learned of the passing of one of our founding committee members. Bill Rose heartily supported our mission to preserve the legacy of Big Annie and contributed his vast expertise and ideas to conversations.

Have you read The Women of Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell? This 2019 work of historical fiction illustrates the activism of Anna Clemenc, a young Slovenian-American woman in Calumet who played a pivotal role in the Copper Country Strike of 1913-14. This year, at the Upper Peninsula History Conference, Annie Clemenc takes center stage in a special keynote sponsored by the Meijer Foundation and presented by Emily Riippa Schwiebert.

Newspapers called her the Joan of Arc of Calumet. Anna “Big Annie” Clemenc was neither a miner nor an executive, but her activism made her synonymous with the workers’ cause during the 1913-1914 Copper Country strike and forever tied her to the Italian Hall Disaster.
