Molly & Benny need a safe place to land…together. 🐴🫏

Meet Molly, a 25-year-old Haflinger, and Benny, a 25-year-old miniature donkey.

These two sweet souls have been inseparable since they were yearlings and have spent nearly all 25 of their years side-by-side.

Heartbreakingly, due to a personal crisis, the loving family who has cared for them their entire lives can no longer keep them. They are deeply grateful that Sunrise Horse Rescue is stepping in to help. Our top priority is finding a safe, permanent home where Molly and Benny can live out their golden years together.

Next up on our meet the Sunrise Horse Rescue herd: Isabella!

Isabella battled severe laminitis after being overfed with rich grass and sugary grains. Equine laminitis is a painful hoof condition caused by inflammation of the laminae, often linked to diet. Despite her young age, this condition threatened her life.

Another rescue assisted Isabella's owner in obtaining veterinary care, yet she continued struggling with this severe condition, requiring urgent intervention. Sunrise was happy to step in and provide Isabella with the quality of care she needed to get her painful condition under control. We are so thankful to our team of veterinarians, farrier, and all who helped care for Isabella.

Fun Fact: She is a flirty mare.

Our Fall Connected Horse Sessions are in full swing.

Connected Horse provides innovative equine-assisted workshops and training that inspire connection and engagement, improving the lives of those affected by dementia and their care partners.

This groundbreaking equine programming is driven by research (https://connectedhorse.org/about-us/research/) conducted at Stanford University and UC Davis and is designed to help those who can attend workshops in person at Sunrise Horse Rescue.

We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Connected Horse, Providence Community Health Foundation Napa Valley and to our incredible staff and volunteers! 🩵

Next up on our meet the Sunrise Horse Rescue herd: Willow!

Willow and her mother, Rosemary, were abandoned at a stable in Walnut Creek, CA. They shared a small paddock together for 5 years. They came to Sunrise together in August 2022.

Willow is 8 years old, and has not had much training. She is very sweet and has a beautiful blond mane. We are working with her in training exercises - she is very willing and making great progress. We provide her joint supplements each day and she is improving.

We believe she and Rosemary deserve a new start and we are so happy to have them here with us at Sunrise.

Fun Fact: Between her and Apollo they have one good eye. 🥰

Series: Meet the herd of Sunrise Horse Rescue!

For our next horse, we are introducing Daddy!

Daddy one of the eldest of our herd, came to us already in his 30's with his bonded pasture mate, a mare named Chili.

A concerned community member alerted us that they needed immediate rehoming due to a property dispute. When horses are relocated, their nervous systems require a significant adjustment to the new environment.

This is true for all horses, but for the aged horse, the challenge for their nervous system is exponential. We knew it was imperative that the extremely bonded pair Daddy & Chili move together to Sunrise, and that their move was handled with the utmost care.

When they arrived at our sanctuary, it was apparent that this was a lot for them, but with constant monitoring by our staff and volunteers, and consistent vet care, they slowly but surely adjusted.

After several baseline vet exams by our veterianry team, and through our observations, it was apparent that Chili had significant neurological challenges. We supported her through many months of constant loving care but she ultimately was not able to pull through and passed.

Daddy remains with us as a beloved and cherished member of the Sunrise family. He graces our herd with his gentle and wise nature and is loved instantly by all whom meet him.

Fun Fact: He always has a great attitude no matter what day it is.

Series: Meet the herd of Sunrise Horse Rescue!

For our next horse, we are introducing Mirage!

Mirage is an Arabian Quarter Horse cross with a unique appearance—an all-white coat overlying pink skin with paint markings.

After spending most of her life exploring the trails of Northern California with her original owner, changing circumstances left Mirage undernourished at a boarding facility alongside her lifelong companion, Adonis.

Though prone to sunburn and managing arthritis in her front pastern joint, her health has improved significantly thanks to daily medications, specialized shoeing, and protective sun gear.

Known for her gentle, friendly demeanor, Mirage is a herd favorite who continues her comfortable rehabilitation, with plans to participate in community programs where she can soak up plenty of love and grooming.

Approx Age: 29+

Fun fact: Actually a paint even though looks grey.

Meet the herd of Sunrise Horse Rescue!

To kick off this series, we are introducing Apollo!

Apollo is a quarter horse who was born with congenital cataracts, leaving him blind since he was very young.

A family that helps rescue horses from Vacaville, CA, reached out to Sunrise when they were overwhelmed by the number of horses they cared for and the medical attention each required.

Apollo came to Sunrise in July 2020 with his herdmate, Fancy, when he was 6 years old. He adjusted well to his time with us and bonded with Rosemary.

Apollo is very sweet and friendly, and he amazes visitors with his sense of direction.

He is also very inquisitive, often tilting his head to listen when conversations are taking place around him.

We had an incredible time celebrating our donors and volunteers at our ice cream social this past weekend.

When we say we couldn’t do this work without them, we truly mean it.

Our volunteers dedicate their time to feeding, cleaning, and loving our herd day in and day out. They are also a tremendous support to our staff when a horse gets sick; they drop everything to help the herd at Sunrise Horse Rescue.

Our donors are the driving force behind our success, keeping our doors open and ensuring we can continue supporting horses in need.

Thank you to everyone who attended and those who could not; you were missed.

Special thanks to Calistoga Creamery for generously providing all the ice cream for the event! It was absolutely delicious. 😋
