On Friday at our home ground, Mark Masons Hall, London Rugby Lodge Raised five brethren. The pack was superbly marshalled by our wily South African scrum half who orchestrated some mesmerising moves. The footwork was precise and when the action moved through the centre and down the wings it was almost balletic! Our mercurial fly-half (playing out of position) directed everything immaculately from the Master’s chair, but this was a true team performance, with everyone contributing and playing their part. Those who were on the touchlines and in the stands witnessed a compelling spectacle, one that will live long in the memory.
At our next fixture in November we will be bringing four more new players into the academy. HUZZAH! 🏉

Bound for Preservation
The Origin of the English Rite of Freemasonry by William James Hughan (1884)

William James Hughan (1851–1911) was a pioneering British Masonic historian and a founding member of the Quatuor Coronati Correspondence Circle. His concise yet meticulously researched work traces the evolution of the "English Rite"—the core system of Craft degrees practiced under the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE)—while placing special emphasis on the Holy Royal Arch degree as its historical and ritualistic completion.

Hughan draws on primary sources like old lodge minutes, constitutions, and correspondence to debunk myths and establish a factual timeline, positioning the English Rite as the foundational mother of regular three-degree Freemasonry worldwide.

He examines how the English Rite diverged from emerging Scottish and Irish variants, influenced by figures like Laurence Dermott, who championed the "Ancient" Grand Lodge against the "Moderns." Hughan stresses the rite's "purity" as a three-degree system, rejecting what he saw as unsubstantiated claims of higher degrees in early English Masonry.

The book's appendices provide transcripts of rare documents, such as the 1769 Charter of Compact and early Royal Arch warrants. The book remains useful to Masonic scholars, and influenced later works like Robert Freke Gould's History of Freemasonry (1885).
