There is a hunger in the human heart, far more powerful than his intellect; a hunger that overpowers his tidy rational mind and makes him cry out in anguish; a hunger so powerful many men and women have killed themselves unable to bear the pain... others learn very early in life that the only escape from this dreadful ordeal is to distract themselves in whatever way possible: they learn the solution is to numb and then forget the pain, and then do whatever is necessary to keep it forgotten.
They do whatever it takes: career, family, money, power, drugs, s*x, violence, and the infinite other ways that help man to remain functional... kill others, even loved ones... whatever works... as long as that hunger remains forgotten.
Yet it never does. It bubbles up to the surface of our consciousness over and over and when it does, we become extremely uncomfortable, looking for ways to get rid of it, even if for a while.
The hunger is a question buried deep within our hearts. It is our curse, our burden in time, our magic key to the gate of the infinite. Our destiny is to first be terrified of the question, then to seek the answer and then upon finding it... to die.
Who am I?
