GFWC/CFWC The Maywood Woman’s Club shares:
We were pleased and proud to join the
Tehama County Museum for their
HISTORY KEEPERS AND SEEKERS EVENT over the weekend.
It was a great time spent with so many history lovers showing and sharing their stories and groups. We were right across from the “Union Army”, the “Reenactors of the American Civil War“, they are were a fun group who also served as the Honor Guard raising the flag and leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. While the Red Bluff Swing Band played our National Anthem oh so beautifully. It was very moving 🇺🇸
Other musical groups that played while the event continued were, Valley Quest who played some fabulous Irish tunes and some that reminded me of mountain music. Well done!
There was a Ukulele Club who entertained us with some very recognizable tunes, they were fabulous!
And last but certainly not least were the Manton Messengers who played some oldies and did a great job too.
If you are planning an event I am recommending any and all of these fantastic musicians 🎶
There were many groups sharing their history and current projects, like the “Native Daughters of the Golden West”, the “Tehama County Libraries” and also the “Tehama County Museums”.
The “Genealogical & Historical Society” were on hand and had many wonderful books about Tehama County History, I’m building a nice little library of the books they offer.
The Museum was open and had some beautiful displays for everyone to learn about. The Museum Annex also had a lot of activities with, the “Sun Country Quilter’s Guild” who had several beautiful quilts and patterns on display.
On the other side of the room was a group of women combing and spinning wool and also a plant that I think she called Flax. It was fun to see all the steps they go through to make the string that another woman was actually weaving into a table runner. What a friendly group they were but unfortunately I didn’t ask them for the name of their group, bet you could get that from the museum because I think the annex is where they meet and store their very special instruments of weaving.
The “Kelly Griggs House Museum” which is located at 311 Washington St in Red Bluff, if you haven’t been to one of their events or taken the tour it is well worth taking the time to check this historic home out.
Other participants were the “Red Bluff Masonic Lodge” the “Los Molinos School District” the “Discovery Center” and the Rangers from the “Ide Adobe State Park” were on hand to tell us about their park and they were very helpful to everyone.
And of course “The Maywood Woman’s Club” was very happy to be there sharing our 128 yr history in Corning. Often people wonder why we are not the Corning Woman’s Club, the simple answer to that in 1898 when we were founded Corning was the “Maywood Colony” in fact we had a few names before it was finally settled on Corning. The last name of one of the railroad execs at the time. Coincidentally he was the nephew of the exec that Corning NY was named for.
Our rich history includes planning and maintaining Woodson park which was the very first motor park in California. Our club started and housed the first library and we’re still supporting our very important library.
We also started the Corning High School and even had a hand in putting the white lines in the streets.
Also and very importantly our clubhouse located at 902 Marin St was built by The “American Women’s League” who published a magazine in support of women’s suffrage (right to vote), the women sold subscriptions to pay for the building of clubhouses. We purchased this 1910 building a few years later and have been using and maintaining it since. It is the only building in Corning on the list of “Historic Buildings” and we are very proud of it and our accomplishments in our small but mighty community.
