The Power and Control Wheel was developed to help us recognize patterns commonly seen in domestic violence, also know that many of these same tactics can also appear in human trafficking and exploitation.
Coercion. Intimidation. Isolation. Emotional abuse.
Financial control. Threats. Blame. Manipulation.
Different circumstances. Many of the same tools of control.
Traffickers may use love, fear, money, housing, substances, threats, shame, or emotional dependence to gain control and that control can happen gradually. What begins as a need for attention, affection, protection, or opportunity can slowly become isolation, dependency, fear, and exploitation.
This is why understanding coercive control matters.
Abuse is not always a black eye.
Trafficking is not always kidnapping.
Learn the patterns.
Trust your instincts.
Believe survivors.
