Today we said goodbye to Josefine from Sweden after an incredible year with the Rotary Club of Nanaimo. 🇸🇪❤️🇨🇦

As we were saying our goodbyes, her host mom quietly asked, “Why didn’t Rotary tell us this part was going to be so hard?”

The truth is… because it’s impossible to fully prepare someone for saying goodbye to a person who has become family.

It hurts because you opened your home, your heart, and your lives. You cared deeply. You laughed together, celebrated milestones together, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re asking, “Why is this so hard?” it’s because you made a difference. You loved without reservation, and Josefine will leave Nanaimo forever changed because of your family. At the same time, she’ll leave a piece of herself here with all of us.

This is the beautiful paradox of Rotary Youth Exchange. The hardest day is also proof of just how extraordinary this program is.

Safe travels, Josefine. Sweden may be getting you back, but you’ll always have a family in Nanaimo. ❤️🌍💙
