Days after the B-52 Stratofortress crashed in the Edwards Air Force Base near Mojave on Monday, the State Capital in Sacramento is flying flags at half-staff to honor the eight lives lost.

If you are privileged to live in the Antelope Valley, you understand that this place is unlike anywhere else.

We endure scorching summers and wild winters, but we also get to witness one of the greatest skylines in the world.

From sonic booms that rattle our windows, to hearing the speed of sound broken on a regular basis… from the innovation of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, to the activity at Fox Airfield and Edwards Air Force Base, our skies tell stories of ingenuity, courage, and service.

We have watched military aircraft soar overhead, marveled at stealth bombers, admired the infamous B-2, and yes… even the mighty B-52.

Sadly, today our skies are a little quieter.

As news spreads of the B-52 that went down shortly after takeoff during a test flight, carrying eight souls on board, our hearts are heavy. For many of us, these aircraft are more than machines. They are part of the rhythm of our valley, symbols of those who willingly step into the skies in service of something greater than themselves.

Our skyline may look a little different tonight. The traffic on Sierra Highway may never again pause to watch that particular aircraft climb into the heavens.

But while the sound of its engines may be absent, we will remember. We will remember the dedication, the sacrifice, and the people behind the aircraft.

To the families, friends, and all those affected: the Antelope Valley mourns with you. We honor the lives aboard and give thanks for every man and woman who takes flight so that others may live in safety and freedom.

Tonight, our skies are quieter… but our gratitude is louder than ever.

‼️UPDATE 6/18:

On Wednesday, over 700 base members convened at the chapel to light candles in honor of the eight aircrew who perished during Monday’s flight.

Today, the Edwards airfield was reopened for flying operations; however regular flight-testing will not commence until next week.

On June 19, the remains of all eight individuals will be airlifted to the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs at Dover Air Force Base for respectful identification confirmation and preparation for return to their families.

This process is private and we advocate for the privacy of all affected families.

A base memorial service is in planning, with more details to follow next week.

The names have been released of those who perished in the EAFB Edwards Air Force Base crash. May God be with their families. 💔

Eight people killed in a plane crash at Edwards Air Force Base have been identified. Officials released the names following a 24-hour waiting period to notify families.

The crash happened just after takeoff around 11:20 a.m. Monday. The base deemed the crash not survivable for the mixed crew of military personnel and contractors aboard.

Col. Thomas Tauer, 412th Test Wing Commander, said the victims "were dedicated professionals, beloved family members and irreplaceable teammates."

A devastating sight to see the burn marks at Edwards Air Force Base, knowing that eight incredible warriors were aboard that B-52 bomber. Although we don’t yet know all the details, we do know that these heroes gave their lives in the pursuit of upholding the principles of our great nation.

May this crew be remembered as our defenders in the sky — now watching over us with a new set of wings.
