BerkeleyEarth

BerkeleyEarth Berkeley Earth is a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 to collect and analyze data to address global warming skepticism. This is the official page.

Berkeley Earth was founded on the values of independence, impartiality, scientific excellence and open-source data. As climate change continues to attract increasing attention worldwide, the need for independent, reliable, non-governmental data is greater than ever. Your support makes our work possible.

This animated map shows long-duration weather stations setting daily, monthly, and all-time record highs and lows in 2022.
It's routine for weather variations to set both new high and low temperature records, but as global warming progresses, new highs have become much more common than new lows, according to our Lead Scientist Dr. Robert Rohde. https://youtu.be/t672H4FORoU

New Grist article is among many recent news stories discussing concerns over rising ocean temperatures, stating: "The world’s oceans have reached their warmest levels in modern history, outpacing climate forecasts and alarming scientists. Daily ocean temperatures have been trending warmer than normal every day for the past month and a half, approximately. Experts warn the pattern does not bode well for marine life and human well-being."

We hope you'll subscribe to our research scientist Dr. Zeke Hausfather's new Substack, "The Climate Brink," which will explore the world's precarious position between a possible climate disaster and a sustainable future. In this post, learn about how scientists project how hot 2024 might be.

The impacts of rising ocean temps are explained in this recent WIRED piece: "What happens in the sea doesn’t stay in the sea. The oceans have absorbed ... (about) 90 percent of the excess heat humans have put into the atmosphere, but the oceans are also capable of handing that heat back to the atmosphere, which in turn heats the land."

Average sea surface temperatures have soared to record highs, and stayed there. It’s a worrying signal of an ocean in crisis.

Worried about climate change? We recommend checking out Ed Hawkin's newly updated climate stripes.
In addition to covering all the countries on Earth, it now includes a selection of cities and ocean areas.

It's wonderful to celebrate the Earth every April, but at Berkeley Earth we spend 365 days a year thinking about ways our data can help policymakers make more informed decisions about mitigating the impacts of climate change. Please join us in this work with a donation in honor of our planet. https://donate.berkeleyearth.org/

Our March 2023 temperature update has been released. Globally, March was abruptly warmer than February and tied for the 2nd warmest March since record-keeping began in 1850. Here are some of the highlights:

🌎 March global average temperatures exceeded 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) above the 1850 to 1900 baseline, for the 10th time.
🔥 On land, March 2023 was the 2nd warmest March since 1850.
🌊 Warm conditions occurred in much of Asia, parts of Europe and North Africa, the Arctic, southern South America, and several oceanic regions.
🥶 Unusually cool conditions were present in parts of the western United States and Canada, as well as the Southern Pacific.

This year is on pace to be the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th warmest year, but considerable uncertainty remains.

Our new High-Resolution Data Set (beta, lower picture) captures in greater detail temperature changes that cause conditions such as the Indian Ocean Dipole, an oscillation in sea-surface temperatures between the Western Indian Ocean & the Eastern Indian Ocean/Arabian Sea. This phenomenon can worsen droughts and monsoons. http://ow.ly/orIq50NB3IT
