Forever Wild Abilene! We rescued her in 2019 from a Texas feedlot. We didn't know she was pregnant, but when her belly started getting a little too big we had a test done and it was positive. In 2020 Abilene gave birth to Libra Moon. She was a very good Mama. Abilene became buddies with our giant Belgian, Bullwinkle, and the two of them lived together at Wild Horse Canyon with a herd of other draft horses and mustangs. We lost Bullwinkle last year. This year Abilene became 28 years old. Her body decided it was time so we helped her transition to the other side where Bullwinkle was waiting for his trusted friend to join him. She had a good life with us. Thank you for making it possible for horses like Abilene, and Bullwinkle, to live in peace and harmony until their days are done. 💓

They have arrived safely! Starfish (right) and Seahorse (left) are now out of danger. Thanks to our wonderful Lifesavers family of supporters these two mares will never be abused, neglected, or sold for slaughter. Of course we'll update as we get to know them better. ❣

URGENT!! Two BLM mares are in danger of being sold for slaughter. Please read and share...

Our friends at Auction Horses Rescue alerted us of two mustang mares sitting in a feedlot in So Cal. Their deadline to be rescued is Friday August 28th. The cost of purchasing before they sell or ship is $2200 - that's about one dollar per pound. They are in good flesh which is why the price is high. Also - we were told there is a chance they are pregnant. They are fairly young, 4 and 6 years old. By now you have seen many posts about the NYT article about the Bureau of Land Management allowing wild horses to be sold to slaughter when it is clearly against the policy and the law. You might be thinking - just saving two when there are thousands in jeopardy is not going to make a difference in the big picture. Let me remind you of the starfish story:

*A boy is walking along the beach after a big storm. There are hundreds of starfish washed up on the sand and dying. He picks one starfish up and throws it back into the ocean, and another, and another. Then a man comes up and says, "son, there are too many to save, you will never make a difference". The boy picks up another starfish and releases it into the tide and says to the man, "I just made a difference to that one".

Please help us save Starfish and Seahorse - because saving even one makes a difference, saving two doubles the difference.

It's happening. Right in front of us. I hope I'm wrong, but BLM just approved a removal of 1100 horses in Colorado and 1800 in Wyoming. And now we see acquisition solicitation for 32,000 rounds of lethal ammo. Thirty-two thousand rounds.

With all the viral posts about , , right now - it seems a good time to re-share this video about Lifesavers horses that have already been saved from the slaughter pipeline. I'm glad the NYT article is giving America's wild horses the attention they deserve, but this has been going on for years and years. More so in the last few years for sure.

Thank you for keeping the issue in all the newsfeeds by commenting and sharing as many of the posts that come through your social spaces. Let's keep it a thing until the S.A.F.E. Act can finally get voted on and passesd by Congress.

That will not be the end of the problem of wild horses vs government, but its a good start and will at least keep them and domestic horses from being shipped across the borders to be butchered.

I'm in it, but the bigger story is about more than Majik and I. Sylvia Johnson, the producer, presented the BLM and cattle ranchers' points of view fairly. But you be the judge.

Please Like and Share: In 2006 I witnessed a wild horse round-up in Nevada. Forgive me for not remembering all the details - it was 20 years ago. But many of my colleagues in horse rescue and advocacy have also viewed these heartbreaking events in person so that you don't have to.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, little has changed over the past 30 years that I have been involved in wild horse rescue. Now that there is another wave of interest from the NYT article exposing the BLM's involvement in funneling captured wild horses into the slaughter pipeline, I want to drive home the need to pass the S.A.F.E. Act. It's been on the table year after year. Sometimes with a different name and a different bill number each time it is reintroduced.

The Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 1661 / S. 775) is bipartisan federal legislation designed to permanently ban the slaughter of horses and other equines for human consumption in the United States and prohibit exporting live horses abroad for slaughter.

Let's keep the ball rolling - contact your reps and shake your vote at them like a voodoo rattle. Let them know that 80% of the American people support this legislation and it's time for it to become law!!!

Midterms are coming. Support our friends like Dina Titus of Nevada who has always been a fierce fighter for wild horses. And Vern Buchanan of Florida recently met with The Wild Beauty Foundation - he is a supporter. The late Lindsey Graham stood for the SAFE Act and Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico. There are many in the House and Senate who would pass this bill - but the Speaker needs to put it up for vote.

But beware - there are lobbyists with $$ who will fight against the horses because they want use of the land. And certainly the current budget of the Wild Horse and B***o Program could be up for grabs too.

If you don't know who your representatives are go to https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative Make a call, email, or send a pigeon! If they are already a supporter - say thank you. If not, tell them they need to get on board!!!

By now you have seen the NYT article about exposing the BLM selling wild horses to known kill buyers for slaughter in Canada and/or Mexico. I'm sharing a post made by our friend Montgomery Creek Ranch (Ellie Phipps Price and Lifesavers saved about 175 horses together in 2010 - they now live at her N.Cal. sanctuary). The images lay out the important points that you will want to know.

The investigation into this one case involving persons and BLM in Ohio took months to culminate. There are people behind the scene who shared well documented photos and events to the NYT and Skydog resulting in this bombshell.

However, it's not really a new "thing". The BLM has been backdooring horses for slaughter, or turning their eyes away when they know that horses are being bought and shipped for 30 years or more. Back in 2012 there was big news about a Colorado man who ended up shipping almost 2000 horses that he purchased from the BLM over a few years. The BLM claimed they didn't know. They knew. They just didn't care.

Yes, the purchase and adoption agreements stipulate that horses will not be sold for commercial purposes, but it requires enforcement when the contract is breached. Again - they don't care.

Since the current administration took over and Project 25 became their guidebook, the implementation of "destroying" the wild horses is now in play. It is clearly written in the document.

But - what is the solution? We cannot continue to allow the BLM or any other government agency to manage our horses when they would rather see them dead. Remember that most of America's mustangs live on federal lands. Remember that the gov wants those lands to be sold and/or to be used for mining and other profit making programs.

So - they're not going to help. And in truth non of the previous administrations have helped much either.

The first safety net would be to get the S.A.F.E. Act passed by Congress - again - not sure this is possible - but its an important first step. The law would make it illegal to buy, sell, ship any horse - wild or domestic - over the border for human consumption.

After that? Our wild horses do need to be managed to a degree that they are not overpopulating in their own herd areas. The BLM's management is culling the herds and selling or adopting them out. This is the dog chasing his tail. A more efficient program is administering birth control to the mares. It is not easy in some remote herd areas - but it works and can keep the births and natural die offs balanced. The BLM spends something like 80 million per year on the Wild Horse and B***o program. A lot of that is paying for round ups. Imagine if the roundups were for administering the vaccine rather than culling the herds?

I believe when there is a will there is a way. Now that this issue is front and center again for a minute - let's not lose the momentum this time. Contact your representative (house.gov) send an email, or make a phone call, or show up at their office. Let them know you are one of the 80% of voting Americans that want a different outcome for our iconic wild horses.

In the meantime Lifesavers will continue to do our part the best we can. We will rescue as many of the horses on their way to slaughter as we can. It's a drop in the bucket - but remember - If you think you are not making a difference, it makes a difference to each life you save.
