Moments of Connection and Healing

Dolly was so happy to welcome back her longtime student, J, this week. After spending most of May in the hospital overcoming several health challenges, J returned for lessons this week.

Before riding, the two shared a beautiful moment of reconnection. As J gently stroked Dolly’s face, Dolly was so relaxed she nearly fell asleep.

Beyond their deep emotional bond, therapeutic riding helps J build the core strength needed to support sitting, standing, and walking-making every ride meaningful in more ways than one.

Two hearts. Four hooves. One special connection that brings comfort, healing, and hope.

Meet Enzo🤍 This saintly Arabian cross gelding joined Legacy Stables and Karin's Horse Connection herd in August and stepped into our therapeutic programs shortly after.

Today Grace, one of the barn owners, has a story to share from a field trip with Enzo last week:

"From the very beginning, Enzo has shown us just how intuitive and compassionate he is. He seeks genuine connection with every student he meets. Last week, during a field trip with students from a local special education class, I witnessed a moment I will never forget.

For one elementary student, visiting the stables and trying something completely new — riding horses — brought a lot of anxiety. She had little interest in participating at first, but I invited her to help me lead Enzo around the arena. As we walked, I noticed her beginning to pay closer attention to him. So we stopped for a moment and simply allowed the two of them to connect.

What unfolded next brought tears to my eyes. She quietly observed Enzo’s big nostrils, his soft swiveling ears, and his large yet loving eyes staring gently back into hers. Enzo leaned in to sniff and nuzzle her, while she seemingly blocked out all the noise and distractions around her, focusing only on him. In that moment, there were no expectations and no pressures — just a moment of deep trust, curiosity, and connection. The unspoken bond they shared was truly magical, and a beautiful reminder of the healing powers horses can have✨"

Thank you to Grace for sharing a wonderful example of how quietly the human-horse connection works! ❤🐴

Did you know research has found that spending time with horses may help reduce stress hormones and promote emotional regulation, specifically in children and teens?🐴❤

Many studies have found positive responses after horse interactions including:
• reduced stress and anxiety
• improved emotional regulation
• growth in self-confidence and trust
• increased feelings of connection, safety, and inclusion

While riding horses has many known physical and mental health benefits, researchers have also observed positive responses after non-riding activities, too!

Unmounted activities like grooming, walking beside a horse, or even simply being near horses have shown many of the positive effects outlined above.

For many students, their weekly lesson becomes more than just a time to be with horses — it becomes a safe space to build confidence, coping skills, connection, and grow as individuals. 🌱

Have you ever heard that horses can “mirror” people? 🧐

Horses are incredibly adept at reading subtle cues and noticing small changes in body language, breathing, and tension. As herd animals, they are constantly communicating with those around them. If you’ve ever watched a group of horses, you’ve likely seen the silent conversation happening between them at all times.

Because of this, they often “mirror” what a person is bringing into the moment—bringing awareness back to the present. If a rider is tense and distracted with a racing mind, the horse may respond in kind. When that person slows down, breathes more deeply, and softens, the horse often does too.

In a therapeutic setting, riders may begin their lesson feeling dysregulated or distracted, but throughout the lesson, they often shift toward a more relaxed state. As the instructor facilitates brushing, leading, and riding, the horse is doing some of the most meaningful work—without ever saying a word.

It’s something we see every week at Legacy Stables and Karin's Horse Connection—and one of the many reasons this work is so impactful 💛

Happy May!🌞🌷💐

With May being National Mental Health Awareness month, we'd love to share with you the many benefits horses can have for your mental health, as well as many other facets of life!!

Did you know horses are considered "prey" animals? Despite horses being domesticated for thousands of years, their natural instincts have remained. With a prey animal mindset, horses stay ever-present in their surroundings as a method of survival. While our horses will never have to face a predator like they horses might in the wild, their natural instinct of staying present is one of the many reasons they benefit our mental health!

Humans are different in that we can easily find ourselves lost in memories of the past or thoughts about the future. We struggle to stay ever-present as our mind and attention are pulled in SO many ways every moment of every day! And that's where horses come in, without even trying.

Spending time with a horse requires you to slow down, take a breath, and just *be* in the exact moment you have in front of you. They silently encourage us to leave the memories from our past and the worries of tomorrow at the barn door, even if just for a moment. Horses give us permission to leave the "hustle and bustle" of life and slow down , and for that we are grateful🐴❤
