As a new school year begins, we remember with gratitude our sisters who entered eternal life in the month of September. Many devoted their lives to education, formation, and ministries that supported the growth of others in faith and knowledge. May their witness continue to shape those they taught and served, and may they now share in the fullness of God’s truth.

On this 11th World Day of Prayer for Creation and the beginning of the Season of Creation, we share part of Pope Leo XIV's message for this day:

"Dear brothers and sisters, the path before us is clear, though it is not easy. We are called to allow our hearts to be renewed, so that we might seek peace and care for creation. Scripture tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from them (cf. Prov 4:23).

If we take up this task with humility and faith, we will become collaborators in God’s work of renewal. We will move, slowly but surely, from desert to garden, from division to communion, and from violence to peace.

May the Lord grant us the courage to walk along this path, so that in our time, swords may indeed be beaten into plowshares, and the promise of the Gospel may take deeper root in our world, and the peace of Christ may reign over all of creation."

🌟✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Stephanie Mohun, OP ✨

A dedicated missionary and visionary leader, Sr. Stephanie Mohun, OP, served as Prioress of St. Mary of the Springs for 24 years, helping expand the congregation’s ministries and educational mission. During her leadership, she founded three academies, two colleges, and a teacher-training school for Sisters, creating new opportunities for education and formation. 📚

Sr. Stephanie also helped extend the congregation’s mission beyond the United States by initiating its mission to China, reflecting her courage, vision, and commitment to sharing the Dominican mission across cultures and borders. 🌎

Her life reminds us that strong leadership, education, and a spirit of mission can open new paths for generations to come. Sr. Stephanie’s vision and dedication continue to inspire the Dominican Sisters of Peace and all those who carry forward the call to serve. 🙏

✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Clement Johnson, OP ✨

A pioneering scientist and educator, Sr. Clement Johnson, OP, dedicated her ministry to exploring the mysteries of science and expanding opportunities for young women in the field of scientific research.

In the 1960s and 70s, Sr. Clement researched retinal dystrophy, a condition that can cause blindness. As one of only about 200 electron microscopists in the nation, she brought her expertise to Dominican College, where she also trained other young women to use electron microscopes and pursue scientific study. 🔬

Sr. Clement’s work reminds us that curiosity, education and a commitment to discovery can open doors for generations to come. Her dedication to science and to educating young women reflects the many ways Dominican sisters have contributed their gifts to the advancement of knowledge and their communities. ✨

For the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Sister Frances Sullivan, OP, writes:

Jesus speaks to his disciples with some harsh words as he says, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.” Jesus gave his disciples a difficult time by showing them that he will endure abuses from the elders, chief priests, and the scribes and ultimately be killed. This does not sound like someone any of us would like to model our lives on! Leave it to Peter to respond by declaring this will not happen to Jesus. Jesus turned to Peter and said, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” So what are we to do?

Paul tells us not to be like the people of this age but to be transformed. How do we experience transformation? We know from reading the Gospels that Peter and the other disciples found a way. I like to think they knew the Psalms and the story of Jeremiah. In Psalm 63, the Psalmist prays “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.” Did Jeremiah internalize these words and, after being “duped,” come about to declare God’s Word to feel like a fire burning within to the degree that he could not hold it in any longer? How do we respond to being nonconformist to the values of this age? Can we follow the response offered by Jesus to save our lives, to be open to transformation?

Can we think as God does and live lives that are counter to the norms many hold today by responding to our neighbor as God asks us to do? We are all with Peter and have read the words of the Psalmist and Jeremiah. Do we let the words take root within so that we can take up the Cross and follow Jesus with open hearts? And, in the words of the opening prayer, invite the love of God into our hearts and deepen the sense of reverence for all and truly be the disciples of Jesus?

A dedicated advocate for young people and families, Sr. John Martin “Johnnie” Fixa, OP, provided strong leadership to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose’s Vision of Hope program, helping make a Catholic education accessible to underserved students in California.

Through her commitment and leadership, Vision of Hope has raised more than $34 million to provide tuition assistance for students in eight parochial schools, supporting young people and families who might otherwise struggle to afford a Catholic education. Her work reflects a deep commitment to serving the young, the poor and the vulnerable. 📚

Sr. John Martin’s dedication reminds us that advocacy can open doors, create opportunities and help build a brighter future for generations to come. Her leadership and compassion continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of students and families throughout California. ✨

📚✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Mother Samuel Coughlin, OP ✨

A dedicated educator, leader and trailblazer, Mother Samuel Coughlin, OP, entered the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation in 1886. After serving as a teacher and bursar, she became Mother General in 1909 and went on to lead the congregation for 40 years.

Under her leadership, the congregation nearly tripled in size, grew to more than 1,400 Sisters, and established 63 new schools and missions. Through her vision, dedication and faithful service, Mother Samuel helped shape the future of the Dominican Sisters and touched countless lives through education and ministry. 🌟📚

Her legacy is a beautiful testament to the power of faithful leadership, courageous service and a lifelong commitment to building a better future. ❤️

📚✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Teresa Estrada, OP ✨

A dedicated educator and beloved presence in her community, Sr. Teresa Estrada, OP, spent more than 60 years serving in Catholic schools in a variety of roles, including as a teacher and principal.

Through her decades of ministry, Sr. Teresa positively influenced hundreds of lives, sharing her wisdom, compassion and commitment to education with generations of students. Her impact extends far beyond the classroom, as she continues to be a source of love and joy to those around her.

In July 2026, Sr. Teresa celebrated a remarkable milestone—her 100th birthday! 🎂💯 Her century of life and more than six decades of ministry are a beautiful testament to a life dedicated to educating, inspiring and serving others.

🌿✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sisters Diane Capuano, OP, Jeanne Clark, OP, Diane Morgan, OP, and Associate Elizabeth Keihm

A commitment to caring for creation, the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville took a lasting step toward protecting the land they call home. On December 7, 2023, the Sisters partnered with the Peconic Land Trust to place a 10.4-acre agricultural conservation easement on part of their Motherhouse property, permanently protecting the land from future development.

For 27 years, this land was cultivated as an organic cooperative known as Sophia Garden/Homecoming Farm, providing a place where sustainable agriculture and care for creation could flourish. Sisters Diane Morgan, Jeanne Clark and Diane Capuano, along with Associate Elizabeth Keihm, spent years researching and planning the effort that made this conservation easement possible.

This project is a beautiful expression of the Sisters’ commitment to their “A Land Ethic” and their Laudato Si’ Action Plan - recognizing that caring for our common home means taking concrete steps to protect the earth for generations to come. 🌎💚
