Owen Does Good

This is my sweet and beautiful baby boy Owen. We welcome him into our family on November 26, 2016. He was born perfectly healthy and strong. At 4 days old, we took him to the emergency room because he was having seizures and irregular breathing. That night, we were transported to the Children’s PICU in Boise, where Owen was cared for until he passed away from bacterial meningitis.

Owen has changed our lives for the better. He brings us back to God, always keeping our focus on the Heavens above, serving others, being kind to our family, and never taking a moment for granted. While it is hard to believe his 9th birthday is coming up, I find so much joy in remembering those precious 21 days we had with him. I find joy in thinking of the many people we have been able to serve through celebrating Owen’s birthdays. While there are still tears this time of year because I grieve the loss of my infant son, I know that he is close by and cheering Phil, his siblings and I on until we see him again someday.

This year, we feel blessed to be able to celebrate Owen by serving a family in our community. They are welcoming a baby girl to their family with some serious health conditions, and I am hoping to make their burden a little lighter. Since Mattie is due to have her baby around Christmas, we are also hoping to give their family a memorable Christmas morning with gifts that will also help entertain the boys while Mom is caring for the new baby.

Friends and Family, we are overjoyed to announce our son Owen’s 9th birthday service celebration. It is hard to believe Owen would almost be 9, and would be fully immersed in school, sports and fishing with his brothers and sister. We miss him so much, but feel his presence close to us, and know we will see him again someday.

This year, we have the wonderful opportunity to bless the sweetest family. When our family moved here almost 3 years ago, Miss Mattie was one of the first people I met as a secretary at my children’s school. Since then, I have grown to know and love Mattie, her husband Collin, her boys Paxton and Sawyer, her sweet Mom, and her sister. They are a remarkable family in our small community.

Mattie and Collin found out they were expecting a sweet baby girl earlier this summer. Mattie shared this statement on her social media.
“Our baby girl has been diagnosed with Myelomeningocele, which is a severe type of Spina Bifida. It means the spinal cord and nerves are exposed and have failed to form properly which can affect mobility, bladder/bowel control, and overall development. We have a long journey ahead and many more doctor’s appointments to go through in the coming weeks to hopefully be able to qualify for an in-utero surgery to close up Miller Kate’s spine. We are facing a lot of unknowns right now… but we have FAITH! 🙏🏼”

Mattie and Miller Kate had a successful surgery in September. There will be many appointments leading up to when she is born, and appointments and procedures after she is born.

It is our wish to celebrate Owen by providing a beautiful Christmas for this sweet family, as well as items to help welcome this beautiful baby girl. Please help us share our love through serving them in Owen’s honor!

For Owen’s 5th birthday, we helped the sweetest family from Afghanistan start their life in America. They came with hardly any belongings, and were starting with nothing. Through the help of the Boise Fraternal Order of Police and Owen Does Good, we were able to completely furnish an apartment for them, and provide clothing, toys, bikes, scooters, games…. The necessities like a washer and dryer, beds, couch, kitchen table, tv and tv stand and more. I think about these beautiful girls and their Dad often, and hope they know what a blessing it was to be able to serve them in memory of Owen. Every year the Teichert family chooses a service project to honor their son, Owen. This year, they helped a family from Afghanistan settle into their new home.

For Owen’s 4th birthday, we collected snack items for the Caldwell and Boise Police Departments. Owen’s Grandpa worked for the Canyon County Sheriff’s Department for 30 years, and Owen’s Uncle currently works for the Boise Police Department. We hold police officers very close to our hearts, and are so grateful for all that they do in our communities across the country. This was such a fun project. When we delivered to Caldwell Police Department, Gavin tried to grab a candy bar and I told him it was not for him and he had a full blown meltdown. One of my favorite pictures from our drop off day.

I’d love to do this project again someday. But for now, we remember the men and women we got to celebrate Owen with in 2020. 💙

In 2019, we celebrated Owen’s 3rd birthday by assembling 50 stockings for the Women’s and Children’s shelter in Caldwell, Idaho. We gathered enough gifts for stockings, and had to sew 50 more coordinating gift bags to fill with extra gifts that wouldn’t fit. Our community really rallied for this project, and we had so many gift cards from local restaurants, frozen yogurt, coffee shops, the ice skating rink, the local barber shop, and many other incredible businesses.

We were able to drop these off before Christmas, and each family unit was given a gingerbread house kit too. I will always cherish this project! If you see our house decorated at Christmas time, Owen had a stocking from this project. It is blue with little cowboys and horses on it. It is the sweetest reminder of the many lives our little boy has blessed.

For Owen’s 2nd birthday in 2018, weeks celebrated through serving the Ronald McDonald House Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Boise across the street from the Children’s Hospital. We gathered snacks, toiletry items, food for meals, and cleaning supplies that would benefit the families staying there.

When we were in the hospital with Owen, we were given the chance to stay here at the Ronald McDonald House, but he was so up and down that we remained in a sleep room in the hospital a quick walk away from Owen’s hospital room. The Ronald McDonald house does a lot of good for families in need.

This was 7 years ago, when we celebrated Owen’s 1st birthday. We chose to collect toys and games to donate to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho. This was the hospital Owen was in for 2.5 weeks. When Loch would come visit his brother, they would give him little toys or books to play with in Owen’s hospital room. It was both hard and so special to be back in that hospital we walked out of with broken hearts and empty arms. But I think by returning to the hospital a year after we lost our son, it was healing in many ways.

It is my favorite time of year again!!! We are ready to start preparing to celebrate our sweet Owen’s birthday in November! Owen would be turning 8 this year, and would have just started 2nd grade! For our project this year, we are celebrating in our hometown of Winnie, Texas. We are planning to make 90 baskets of sunshine to deliver with our children to the local nursing home residents in the Arboretum of Winnie. These baskets will include special gifts like lemonade, peanut m&ms, Bath and Body works lemon soap, crossword puzzle books, highlighters, a game (we plan to return and take our kids to play games with our new friends), a cheerful mug, and other fun items. I am working on the Amazon gift list, but some items will be purchased at other stores.

The second part of Owen’s birthday celebration we are hoping to make happen, is installing two buddy benches at the local baseball field. Last year all three of our boys played ball there, and every time they walked into the field, I imagined Owen right there with them. Buddy benches or friendship benches were created to combat loneliness and bullying in schools, but I think it’s important to remember you’ve always got a buddy at the ballpark too.

This is truly a blessing to be able to celebrate Owen through serving others, and to be able to share our son with the world. He is precious, and I’m grateful he is ours forever.

It’s been 7 years since this beautiful little boy was born. 7 years since I held him and kissed his soft cheeks. We miss our sweetest little Owen every single day, and look forward to our joyous reunion someday. It’s hard to not imagine him in the mix with his rough and tough brothers and sister, and hope that he would have been the peacemaker. 😂

A few months ago we were driving, and Sam asked me where I thought Heaven was. Without hesitation, he told me it’s closer than we think. He said, “I feel Heaven all around us, and I know Owen is close.” And that has played through my mind every day since.

came through for us today! Found some of the softest blankets for adults and children! We also found some adorable squishmallows. Every kid loves those, right?
