FYI for any folks out in back of Spednic Lake this fall! This important project will improve fish passage and connectivity between Palfrey Lake and the inlet stream. Big thank you to all the project partners involved.

UPDATED PUBLIC NOTICE…The Eastbrook road (otherwise known as the Georgia Pacific Rd.) will remain closed at kilometer 5 until November 1st as we continue with the installation of a Bailey bridge across Palfrey/Big Lacoote Stream. We thank the public for their cooperation.

FYI - Ferry Point border crossing between Calais and St. Stephen will be closed beginning on October 13 while repairs to the bridge are undertaken.

CALAIS - October 1, 2026 - Starting October 13, the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will temporarily close the Ferry Point Bridge over the St. Croix River which connects Calais, Maine and St. Stephen, New Brunswick for six weeks for a bridge rehabilitation project.

The project work includes deck rehabilitation and bridge joint repair on the Maine side of this international border crossing. Work is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Motorists traveling between Calais and St. Stephen should use the Milltown International Bridge (8 AM to 4 PM ET) or the International Avenue Bridge/St. Stephen Third Bridge (24 hours). Commercial traffic must use the International Avenue Bridge, also known as Third Bridge.

Travelers should expect delays, plan extra travel time, and follow all posted signs and directions in the work area.

MaineDOT appreciates the public's patience as crews complete this work to maintain the safety and reliability of the Ferry Point Bridge.

This past Spring, Summer, and Fall we've been conducting water quality sampling at 20 different locations throughout the St. Croix Watershed as part of a study looking at how water quality is changing in the St. Croix.

Many of these stations are part of a longer term dataset having been sampled for more than 20 years! Big thank you to funding from the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund for funding this important work.

Check out the views from some of our sampling stations from this past September, and a friend we met along the way. Hard to beat days like this at the office.

We'd like to extend a big thank you to our friends at the Allagash Wilderness Waterway for delivering one of their famous picnic tables to us! For years we've heard about how the Allagash Wilderness Waterway had some of the best picnic table setups going, and so we're excited to finally get our hands on one.

This table was delivered by Ranger Bob Johnston, and with some help of our staff and Registered Maine Guide Wayne Daggett, we brought it into the top campsite at Little Falls and assembled it.

The table is a 12 foot long spruce table fitted with tarp poles and a ridge pole for those wet days.

During some recreational assessment work this week we had to take a minute to gaze at these spectacular trees at some of the backcountry campsites on Spednic Lake.

A bit of what we've been up to the past week, including some trail maintenance on the Boulderwalk Trail at Spednic Lake Prov. Park, campsite maintenance at Little Falls, conducting recreational assessments at remote sites on Spednic Lake, capped off with our recreation supervisor Dave soloing an old town tripper filled with field gear and a busted up picnic table through Little Falls!

Don't worry - that table was replaced!

Please be careful if you're on the water today, especially this afternoon and this evening. Weather forecast for today could see severe thunderstorms with high winds. Be mindful of large trees that can come down in or around campsites on the water.

Heat will return through the day on Tuesday, with some areas in the Central Highlands and Bangor area seeing temperatures lift into the lower 90s, with increased humidity as well. These conditions will act to fuel thunderstorms, with storms becoming severe through the late afternoon and evening hours. The greatest threat from these storms will be for damaging winds, and there may also be large hail that could reach at least golf ball size. Isolated tornadoes are also possible. Some storms may produce severe threats after sunset: Ensure you stay weather aware and have a way to receive critical warning information overnight!

There could be some showers and storms late Tuesday morning into early Tuesday afternoon, and the timing of these showers could have impacts on the severity and timing of the stronger storms into the evening hours.

Please be advised that due to a culvert replacement on the road to Spednic Lake Provincial Park (O'Malley Road) on Tuesday, July 14th, the road will be impassable to vehicle traffic from approximately 7am-3pm. Rain on that date may change the construction schedule.
